Weighing Brass

When is the proper time to weigh brass for sorting purposes? New right out of the box, after prepping and trimming, after fire-forming, etc.? Also, what should I use as a soring weight variance-one tenth of a grain, 1/2 grain, grain, what? I am new to hand reloading and want to achieve as much accuracy as possible. I currently hand load for a 6.5/285 and a .308 Win which are used in long-range BR shooting.

Not saying my method is right, but I sort after the case prep is done. My thought is that a specific weight of brass will fill a specific volume in the chamber and should have very close to the same internal volume. I usually buy 500pcs of brass for a specific use and sort by 0.10 grain batches. I then take the brass and group by batches of 50rds. I use 50 pcs of the two extremes of brass weight, combination of heavy and light) for load development and I usually save 50pcs made up of each 50pc group weight for spares in case I lose a case. So out of my last batch of 6BR brass I sorted:

50-126.5/126.6
50-126.6/126.7
50-126.7/126.8
50-126.9
50-127.0
50-127.1/127.2
50-127.2/127.3
50-127.3/127.4
20<126.5 and 30>127.4 for load development
46 spares made up of the above weight groups
4 lost cases

Hope this helps,
Greg
