Wax on bullets

Does wax on 22lr bullets bother with the rifling on barrel. Seems to me if it leaves a deposit it would be like shooting on a clean and lubricated barrel.

Think of that wax like the lubrication used for cast bullets to prevent leading. Same idea. Lube and wax both are mostly burned/melted during firing. The minimal residue seldom causes a problem and just requires routine cleaning.

Actually the lubricant is important. Every time you change ammo, you need to fire enough of it to condition the barrel.
Groups tend to get smaller with ammo your rifle likes.

For example Eley Tenex lubricant is the same for most lots. There may be some differences from old to new.
You can test different lots without having to pre condition the barrel. However changing to another Eley type like Club also changes the lubricant so its the same as switching to a different ammo brand.
You need to precondition the barrel with an adequate amount of ammo.
Differs for each rifle but 10-20 rounds is typically enough.

Always shoot a dozen or so shots when changing ammo . Youll know how many it takes when it starts grouping.

Good advice. This is typical especially when changing brands.
I never had this happen before but when switching from one lot of CenterX to another lot of CenterX (2m/s speed difference between lots and manufactured a couple of years apart), it took 10 shots to settle in. The 1st lot was all 10's/X's. The 1st shot of the 2nd lot was a 7 at 6 O'clock, next a 7 at 3 O'clock, then a 7 at 5 O'clock. Then it starting shooting a bunch of 9's all over the place, at this point I was ready to give the rest of the brick away, but then it started shooting X's again (with no changes to the sights the whole time). I've been shooting the same lot for years so maybe this is common and I just forgot, but I don't remember ever having such a drastic change in POI before with same ammo (just different lot).

The wax is good to a point but it also acts as a debris trap. Some of that debris is the powdered glass that is used by every manufacturer in their primer compound to enhance ignition. Glass over time will collect in the residue in the barrel and could, not will but could, cause premature wear on the first few inches of the barrel.

Adequate cleaning is the best insurance that this does not happen.
