Washington is one thing but Tennessee is outrageous!

jonbearman

I live in new york state, how unfortunate !
Tennessee is trying to ban anyone on anti depressants regardless of the reason including being over weight. Look it up. This has to be one of the worst laws ever come up with. It will strip you of your gun rights to you are off them for 6 months or more. Look it up and check it out with a republican governor. Truly sad if the people just let it take hold so call your senators and assemblymen and tell them you will no longer support them if they vote the wrong way. Good luck.

This anti-depressant/firearm connection is bullshit anyway, and I can prove it.

There's been times when I was angry, depressed, mood that could kill, -- and all I had to do was take a shotgun or rifle, and walk a few miles in the sage brush. In no time at all I'm that happy twelve year old that God meant me to be. jd

The only thing I would add is people have forgotten that a walk through nature occasionally is therapeutic. People don't think they have the time for it.
Like a lot of things. Concentrating on things that really don't matter and forgetting the things that actually do.

The way we treat and handle mental disorders in this country has got to change but this is one of the hurdles. Where is the line? I don't know the answer but mental health and the cultural changes in society, including faith and moral values is the problem. It's a step too far but in the right direction. It'll never pass anyway. They likely know this but are taking the pulse of the people on mental health legislation other than this one.

This is a tough nut to crack. If you look at the majority of mass shootings, the shooter often has a history of a mental disorder. Often a doctor has prescribed a mental altering drug to address the disorder. The patient takes the medication and starts to feel better. The person figures they are feeling better and discontinue taking the medication and they unknowingly revert to their pre-medication state. Bad things happen. We ask, how is it that the authorities didn't know or act to secure any guns this individual may have.

Now, how to you qualify what mental issues/medications disqualify you from owning/possessing a gun? Who is going to make that determination, take that responsibility/liability?

How many veterans have claimed they have PTSD when they mustered out to get the extra disability funds that that condition provided? That is a mental condition and specific drugs are prescribed to treat it. Do you disqualify a veteran (who is identified as having PTSD) from owning a gun? What politician will touch this?

Yes, we need to figure out a better way to treat the mental illnesses that afflict individuals and determine if the illness and the medications that are prescribed to treat them disqualify a person from gun ownership. Is the condition life long, or can an individual re-qualify for gun ownership.

It seems easy to make the determination for someone else, but it is entirely different if it effects us personally. I guess we need to be more pro-active with our health care professionals and ask about the medications they are prescribing and what the ramifications of taking this medication are. Does that just push us to not seek help for the different conditions that befall us because we know the possible consequences?

I wish I had an answer to all these issues. There will undoubtedly be a long and painful journey to figure out how to ensure that individuals who may be a danger to themselves and others are provided the care that secures safety and health for everyone.

I sent emails to my reps two weeks ago over this "special called session" over gun control. I spoke about my concern for our so called conservative governor seemingly swaying left and giving in to leftist ideology. Still haven't gotten a reply back.

I know that there are folks here that are daily users of one or more of the anti- depressant/anxiety/mood altering/ personality stabilizing drugs. And I include alcohol, weed, speed, and even nicotine and caffeine.

I don't want to offend anyone, but prolly will.

Anyone these days who doesn't realize or admit that there are several non-pharmaceutical methods to correct psychological issues, is either uneducated, lazy, or simply out of the loop; and I include doctors.

I guess these days, we've decided that any problem can be best solved with a pill from the doctor, or a stipend from the gummint. Taking a few 20 minute walks every day is just too much to expect someone to do when a couple of daily doses of Somkindafeelamene could be prescribed.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that if staying off of some of the dope in order to pass background checks for guns is necessary -- well a lot of folks will probably be better off. jd

I totally agree with jds. Life can be tough. How is a person on antidepressants going to deal with life’s trials and tribulations when they’ve been living on antidepressants ? I mean the commercials themselves say “ may cause thoughts of suicide” which also means thoughts of homicide. Unfortunately, fact is every mass/school shooter from Columbine to Nashville has been on one form of antidepressant or another . Yet the propoganda media which knows this has chosen to stay silent and blame the guns. Only now that huge numbers of people are on these sort of pills are they ready to play their hand. Not that they aren’t occasionally needed. But definitely not the way they are being prescribed as of now. This doesn’t surprise me one bit.

A 20 minute walk ain't good 4 me. After about 10 minutes the hip and knees are about done. 38 years of Raquetball will do that......
Sounds like maybe you're a candidate for a rowing machine. Or better yet, a heavy bag. Heck, I don't know. I'm not exactly big on exercise myself. My plan lately has involved splitting wood. And I don't even have a wood stove.

What I do know is that most of us would be happier if someone slapped the phone out of our hands and gave us almost ANYTHING else to do.

I'll bet you were in great shape back when you were playing racquetball.:D
Probably no depression either. jd

I wonder if anyone ever stoped to think,
Depression is the appropriate response to the shit were in.
I believe if your not depressed you need a wakeup call.

Developing mental skills to DEAL appropriately with problems in your life is imperative. Big Pharma / MEDIA wants everyone to just take a pill.

I've had anxiety and depression my entire life. "Self medicating" with alcohol almost killed me.
Shooting, reloading, and hunting saved my life.

However, attacks on law abiding gun owners is an abomination.

Probably not...shoulders are junk too. At 75 and retired going on 4 years I stay busy. Doing what she says, working on the race car and making bullets, shooting, ect. Had a little fender bender last month. The widow maker was 100% plugged, 3 stents and am good to go....lost 2 days there, back to normal. Thinkin I didn't notice my low alcohol light was on....

Starting in 1977 I split wood for 9 years. 95% by hand. Hard on the back, but no money makes the decision easy.
