WARNING: Spammers

Most of you have noticed a recurring spammer, that has shown up under a few different names now, but always from the same region. Generally pretty easy to pick out, but I've noticed that some of their replies to topics have been a little more on point than their usual one-word reply. Based on the behavior, I do not believe this is an automated attempt or at least, not wholly automated.

If I had to guess, I'd say they are trying to build up a post history so that they can make a run in the Classifieds and look legit-ish.

My warning is this: please make sure you know who you are dealing with in the Classifieds section, or before handing out any information in a PM. As an open forum, there are a limited number of options we can deploy to deal with this sort of thing and remain open while still having a relatively short technical overhead.

Any of you with a systems/dev/network background will know that it's fairly trivial to bypass or spoof most of the validation stuff on open forums these days.

I also want to add that we tried to place more and tougher questions during initial signup, but unfortunately, some of our "brothers and sisters" can't even answer the easy-peesy questions we have now. If we provide really solid questions that only an experienced shooter would know, I can guarantee that my message box will be full and my phone ringing with angry complaints: "Gosh durn it... why do you make it so hard to sign up..."

THANKS! Your speculation might come true. Good reminder for many who buy and sell to rate the other party involved. In my case some transactions were not rated and I assume that's not unusual.

Beware of "fishing" too. I got dinged by a "buyer". Never followed through and no further communication. I think he was just fishing for my email and my paypal account. He had low post count and no feedback. I should have known better. :-[

Ask for a phone#, call it & verify - I know "old school" however, still decent preventative.
You can usually tell if they're legit.

Some questions I'd like to see:

Which one is a verb - sale or sell? As in "I have some stuff I want to sale" which shows up here frequently. It sure won't be to me.

What is a verb?

What do you call the fine lines one sees in a rifle scope? I've kept a list from here over the past ten years and I have 27 different ways folks managed unsuccessfully to spell reticle. The easy way out is use crosshair even if it's not.

The use of "shoot" versus "shot". Way too hard I suspect. "I shot the Sheriff but I did not shoot the deputy" will confuse a lot of people. I miss you Bob Marley but did you really have to do this?

Speaking of spelling, doe anyone know how to really turn off spell check with a Android Smartphone. I went into settings and the auto correct is turned off but the spell checker continues on. This is one of the most annoying things I have to deal with every day.
