Warning on new Leupold scopes

Those batteries will last several years............How long you going to stay in Africa?

Looks like an enterprising fellow could use back of a knife blade to unscrew them?

This. You should, at the very least, have a knife on your belt if going to Africa for heavens sake! Just check the caps at home to make sure they were not installed by a gorilla at Leupold. Possibly the same guy that installs Nightforce windage/battery covers at 90 ft lbs.!! Lol. This is a very nice looking scope imho. If a battery cover gets you this upset, you should probably just stay home and send me the tickets! Lol. I just sold a NF scope that is at least 15 yrs old and was still on the original battery. You should be fine on a safari to Africa one would think. But, in case you jinxed yourself, take a few spare batteries just for the piece of mind. Have a good trip.

PSA: Spare lithium batteries in checked baggage are banned. My last trip, I carried a pack of new in my carry on bag and just for s&g removed the one in my scope in the checked bag.

I could probably be described as a "safety Luddite".
I contend that many or possibly most safety ideas and modifications frequently create awkward and often unsafe conditions that complicate and confuse the safe and careful use of tools, firearms, vehicles --- you name it.
These safety features also foster a sense of complacency that makes folks believe that safeties always work, and that general and sensible care doesn't need to be used.

Flame on, I can take it. ;) jd

Regulations changed for devices containing these types of batteries last year. I’m guessing we’re just starting to see a long line of archaic changes as each manufacturer decides best how to CYA from litigation…

Geez. Really ? Needing an extra tool to remove a scope caps is a reason to trash a scope ? What do you do when your vehicle batteries die ? With today's vehicles, you can even see the batteries let alone replace them yourself. I guess you should be glad you can't drive to Africa.

Moral of the story---

When leupold turned thier backs on the decades of hunters and shooters that built thier company by
Closing custom shop
And discontinued all Gloss scopes
And started farming out to liwest bidder in korea, China, Phillipines.

While still advertising "MADE IN USA"
Yep
You get what you deserve for continuing to support thier buisiness.

That's for sure. I really liked the fact that they would change the retical on your scope. Did that a few times.

Correct. No love for Leupolds anymore, if for no other reason than half their mag rings need a pipe wrench to turn. Maybe they should also include a tool for that.

Usually self-inflicted and most are due to over-tightening the rings. The VX-6HD's do include a lever.
Yeah, many brands include levers on variables for convenience, but not for necessity! The last Leup I bought was a compact 2-8x or something and I sent it right back after taking it out of the box. No exchange just refund.

A side note on button batteries of all sizes. Some of the manufacturers are coating their batteries with a foul tasting substance. It is in theory conductive and does not cause connection issues. Not true. My truck key/bob was requesting a new battery too often. I cleaned with lacquer thinner and the issue went away. The batteries are marked. I cleaned all button batteries before use now.

Foul tasting?! Did u lick it like i do with 9v?!

That "Taste" is in theory supposed to keep little kids from swallowing them.
That said... Have you ever tasted those Sour Patch candies ? Kids will eat those by the package.
