PLEASE READ WARNING -- Beware of TEXTs from SCAMMERS

Forum Boss

Administrator
In the last couple of months we are seeing a new criminal activity.

Scammers read posts in the classifieds, then send texts to the phone number of a forum member who posted he wanted to buy. The scammer pretends to be the seller and then requests payment via Zelle, PayPal F&F, or other electronic system.

The scammers are getting the intended buyer's phone number via web searches, or in many cases, because the would-be buyer has posted his phone number in the thread (or prior posts).

PEOPLE READ THIS and FOLLOW the instructions:

1. NEVER Send money when prompted by an unsolicited Text message to your phone.

2. Do NOT put your full name and phone number in ANY public post -- use a Private Message.

3. Do NOT use your actual name as your Forum Name.

4. NEVER ever do a deal without a VOICE Phone Call. Talk to the seller ON THE PHONE!
REPEAT -- NEVER EVER do a deal without a VOICE Call -- pick up the phone and TALK.

5. If someone demands payment by Zelle or PayPal/Venmo F&F, refuse and contact Forum Boss. Record the incoming phone number for potential referral to the police and FBI.

NOTE: PayPal "Good and Services" with FEEs does have buyer protection. It is OK, but still may never be used for Guns and Ammo.

6. If you do get a text seeking payment, check the area code -- if it is different than the seller's stated location, record the number and confirm (via PM) with the real seller.

------------------
If you do get a text requesting payment for an item you want -- tell the person to communicate via Private Message inside the Forum. Do NOT send any money!

------------------
We strongly recommend that you disconnect Zelle from any Bank account you may have. Scammers are grabbing billions of dollars now via Zelle scams. Zelle connects directly to your bank account and the scammer can pretend to do a $50 sale and instead take $5000 and clean out your bank account in seconds. Zelle has no buyer protection.

OK, the scammers are stepping it up.

Today there were two (2) scam requests. In both cases prospective buyers posted their phone numbers ONLINE in this Forum.

People -- LISTEN to me for goodness sake.

If you receive an unsolicited text from ANYbody regarding a Forum sale, you MUST Assume that it is a scammer.

NEVER EVER send money without a VOICE Phone call.

And demand confirmation of the seller's identity -- his full name, city/state, shooting club.

And NEVER USE ZELLE or PayPal F&F or Venmo F&F or Cash App.

Attention: just got scammed by Madjamie81@gmail.com

FORUM BOSS: There is no Forum member with that email address.
As noted -- EVERY unsolicited email or text should be assumed to be from a scammer.
Users have posted their phone numbers or emails in posts that can be seen with internet searches.

@forum boss , can you make it so that new warning can be closed or stops after one notice? It makes it nearly impossible to use this forum on a mobile device because the warning covers half the screen and can’t seem to be closed. Super annoying.
Same issue here. I understand it is there to make sure everyone sees it, however once we read it it would be nice if maybe we could x out of it, click “read” or “ok” to acknowledge, etc.? Not even sure if that’s an option with it?

Had a scammer text me pretending to be seller of an item I posted I’ll take. Don’t know how they got my number. But here is the Scamner number

Lightfoote had posted his phone number in a public location. I have removed it.

People -- check your profile, posts, sale threads -- do NOT put your phone number there.

In general -- if YOU EVER receive a text asking for payment do NOT pay a penny without a VOICE phone call. Pick up the phone and TALK!

And never ever use ZELLE or PayPal/Venmo F&F.

ZELLE is extraordinarily dangerous because it connects directly to your bank account. It is now the subject of a massive Class action due to over $870 million in fraud. We strongly recommend that ALL Forum members should immediately de-activate ZELLE from their bank accounts.

People -- For Pete's Sake LISTEN to me!!

Another guy lost some big bucks this week.

He got a text claiming to be from a seller. Then that buyer sent out hundreds of dollars.
This was soooooo wrong.

No phone check, no custom photos requested, no PM back to the REAL Seller to confirm.

People WAKE UP!!!

EVERY single Forum member who claimed (to me) that he had NOT posted his phone number or email in the Forum was WRONG. I found that info with a 30 second search.

You must assume that you have probably posted your phone # or email at some point. Some guys even posted their info on the Seller's public profile. That's nuts...

With your phone number a scammer can send a text to you claiming to be a SELLER.

People for the Nth Time -- if you get an unsolicited text or eMAIL...

DO NOT SEND MONEY

DO NOT SEND MONEY

PROTECT YOURSELF!!!
We have stated over and over and over that you should NEVER send money without making a VOICE Call. VOICE -- got that people. Pick up the phone!

Folks, I am not aware of any person in 20+ years who has been scammed who actually picked up his telephone and made a VOICE CALL to the Seller.

NEVER EVER send a Frigging Penny without a VOICE CALL!

I had two different people attempt a scam recently so i have gone back and removed a post that i had my ph number. I did not know if we would want to post something but i have the ph numbers and alleged mailing addresses for two of them. Do you want to post these? My son is PD so i was going to ask if there is a way to go after them.

Just encountered another scammer -- attempting to impersonate me (the seller). Fortunately, the buyer smelled a rat and didn't fall for the scam. I had already sent my contact information to the buyer, and when the phone numbers didn't match the first red flag went up. The scammer's call came from 706-944-1823. There seems to be very little information available about this number (AT&T, Georgia area: Augusta, Columbus, ...). I'm about 2000 miles away. It might be a burner.

Your personal information is surprisingly easy to find on the internet, and it's also possible that your account or even the Accurate Shooter web site has been compromised. Consider changing your password. If you have any doubt about authenticity, you can always ask for something that only the seller could provide; e.g., "I'd like to see a photograph of that rifle with the bolt removed."

Be careful out there.

Question about the opening post in this thread. Item 3 says to not use your real name as your forum name. Um, well, if I change my forum name, does that screw anything up history-wise?

I believe I've only posted my phone number in a few PM's to buyers & sellers. This hasn't stopped a couple of scammers from texting me with offers to sell stuff that doesn't belong to them. The latest was last night from an area code 409 number.
