wanting to start competing in nra prone at 600 in spring

got 243 1 in 9.25 twist. 26" barrel. what bullets would work the best? just starting. mostly a varmint hunter. i figure they will help each other. anyone ever use a 16 power at 600? lol. i'm shooting with what i got. also hope to shoot in f-class with 7mm rem mag i got. 45 power on it. any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. don't figure i'll break any world records just hope to hit the target. ;D

NRA prone will require a iron sight rifle with a sling to use as a rest. Unless the Match program says any rifle any sight. I surely would not turn you away if you came to my match though. I would give you over half my gear to help in any way. FTR is off the Rest with a 308 or 223. FT open is any calibre other than that. using a rest in the front and back. To get the full details check out the Rule book on line and go to a Match and watcha match and ask questions. Bring you gear and just about everyone will help you. Arrive early or later and ask questions of folks who are done shooting as not to disturb then while there getting ready to shoot or running the line. We would love to have you out either way,

16x is enough for an NRA 600yd prone match but not enough for an F-Class match. The target is sooo much smaller.

12Toby.............I had the same start in F Class 4 years ago. Went from Palma to F Class with a stock Savage 12FV in .243, 9.25 twist, cheap Bushnell 6-24. Harris bipod which I still use. Have never used a pedestal.

Had your attitude. Wanted to try it out. No great expectations. Just wanted to have some fun. Had enough experience after 50 years of competitive shooting to ignore other shooters telling me I had a pile of junk.

Went to every practise that Spring and early Summer. Went to the Provincial Championships in August and won the Saturday Agg (300, 500, 900, 1000) in Factory Model, a special Ontario F Class division that encourages guys to bring out their factory spec varmint rifles and get involved.

Best load was 107 SMK, Win brass and primer, compressed load of 46.5 gr RL25. Coal 2.830. Chronod at 3050 fps out of a 26 inch barrel.

I have since moved on to custom rifles and wildcat cartridges but starting out simple and cheap taught me a lot of valuable lessons.

Throw a Bi-pod on the 243 and go shoot a match in f-class. Let them know your new. There are probably still some matches being run in Tennessee maybe even Ohio. I think Cincinnati has a 600 yd club.

model 12 toby,
I sent you the info on the Malvern club. We have a 3x600 match on the 17th. PM me and I'll give you directions and be there to help you for your 1st match. All you need to do is show up and have fun.

It is 10-17-10 and all the info is on the web site. They allow 5 sighters for each string of fire there as well. They are very flexible there, allowing you to shoot F-class, sling/prone, all scope, all irons, just mark your score card as such. Now get busy on that press!

i won't make it on the 17th. i don't even have any bullets yet. i'm shooting for november. literally. going to shoot it out at 200 yards with my two guns and see which one to take.

Take the 243, it's a great 600yd cartridge. Get a box of bullets & load them up......... There isn't an outdoor store in easten Ohio?

Bergers are better, but, out of a factory barrel and a new shooter you won't see any real diffrence - really. 1/2 the F-T/R wins at my club are won with a 223 and 75gr hornadys - because thats the best bullet that will stabilize out of the 1-9 twists that most people have.

model 12 toby,
listen to what the other shooters said. I know some of them and they are trying real hard to get you over the 1st time jitters. I will be there, weather permitting doing some load testing with a new rifle, so I will have plenty of time to "show you the ropes" so to speak. If you are serious, just PM me and I'll give you my e-mail address and phone # and I'll do my best to answer your questions for you. Once you get started in this game, you will thank all of us.

Here are the additional dates for other 600yd matches at the Malvern, OH matches:

Sunday, October 17, 2010 MR #16
Sunday, October 31, 2010 MR #17
Sunday, November 14, 2010 MR #18

You will need 60 rounds +sighters which is approximately 75 rounds.

This range will have a 1000yd operational by next year. Great range and club with good people.

i'll be there 14th of november. 75 rounds? wow. i gotta get to work. probably shoot my 7mm though. i started working on it today. 75 rounds? d**n. that's a lot.

model 12 toby you're not going to shoot 75 rounds in one string....you're going to shoot 3 relays 5 sighter shots if you want them then 20 for record....then you switch with your shooting partner. then come back to the line or go mark targets for another shooter.

you really need to go!!!!!!! you'll be hooked and can't wait for the next one to come.

it's not as hard as it seems......i just started doing it this year and this saturday will be my 5th one........
