Wanting to make a tuner for center fire

Hi
Specs are 1.250 dia barrel, stainless steel, want to make a tuner that threads on.
I could buy one but I have a lathe and use projects as learning excersizes so need ideas on weights sizes ect. Not necessarily a copy of all the others
Thx for the help!

It doesn't take much. I've seen top shooters with big heavy ones, and I've seen top shooters with what looked like an 1/8th inch thick washer they threaded and used that.

You say “not nessessarilly a copy of all the others”…..it would be difficult to come up with something that has not already been tried.

what ever you come up with, either one piece or two piece, be sure and make the thread that actually advances the tuning part pretty fine. I like 36 tpi, mainly because my tuners are one piece that thread directly onto the barre with a clamping feature.

When I say one piece, I am referring to a tuner where the entire assembly moves,.A two piece incorporates a piece that attaches to the barrel with an adjustment fixture threaded to it.

here are two of mine. It gives you an idea of a one piece design that e corporates a “dampener”.35317FAC-C965-40F7-AB91-8D43B1AF5104.jpeg

I made this combo brake/blooptube/tuner just to try it. I wanted to see if there was a spot out in front of the muzzle that would tune best and it did shoot better the farther you move the tuner out to the end. I used 40 tpi and have 24 marks so each mark moves the tuner a little more than .001 and that will change the tune. The ring is probably too heavy but it will end up on some heavier barrels. I think 6-8 oz is a decent place to start. But make sure everything else about the rifle is worked out and its well tuned before you go adding a variable like a home made tuner. thumbnail (1).png

I like that. I found out from some rimfire guys they like a bloop tube to shield the bullet from wind in its first bit out of the barrel til it stabilizes. Should work the same way on a centerfire if the blast inside isnt too bad, which that design with the muzzle brake takes care of that. I have some that are like a regular tuner with the tube out front and no brake per my game’s rules.

I have heard the same thing. My thought was even if the tuner aspect does not pan out we have a brake with a 7" wind block in front of it. Just something I wanted to try for years and finally spent a day to build. Its all one piece so it took a little bit of time but not bad. Still more testing to be done.
