Wanting a new Reamer??

I want/need to have a new reamer ground in standard 284 caliber,

Here is the average spec's from 500+ rds of New Brass (Win),
and about 500 rds of 1 fired brass,
this is ALL the older Win brass.

I measured and got these spec's,

NEW BRASS,
Base Dia, (just above the extractor groove = .490-.491"
Shoulder (at break angle of main case body = .465-.466"
Neck Dia = .305"
Length = 2.165"

Neck sized Fired brass,
Base Dia, (just above the extractor groove = .491"
Expansion ring = .495"
Shoulder (at break angle of main case body = .470"
Neck Dia = .310"-.312'"
Length = 2.170"

Once fired brass,
Base Dia, (just above the extractor groove = .490-.491"
Expansion ring = .495"
Shoulder (at break angle of main case body = .468-.470"
Neck Dia = .320"
Length = 2.165"

I have FL/neck and SB die sets, and I HATE the big bulge at the expansion web.

What spec's would you have the reamer ground for ??

Any thoughts suggestion or Ideas I have missed??

Tia,
Don

Have brass in hand w/ dummy loaded to-
Have your current reamer ground & piloted to your specifications.
Cost will be approximately 1/2 the price of a new one.

(W-W brass wouldn't be in my equation)

and if the machinist doing the work is not "on" then all the specs of your reamer mean nothing...
two part equation......

If you now have a big bulge at the web, my thinking is your old dies won't be of any use to you. Call Harrell but I don't know that he does .284 dies. Call Dave Kiff at Pacific Tool and Gauge and ask him your best direction to go. W-W brass would not be my first choice either but then again .284 isn't my thing.

In the present situation, It is very hard to find any 7mm bullets,
IF I HAD a reamer, I would certainly have it reground to better fit this WW brass.

REASON for the question on WHAT SPEC'S to have the reamer ground to.

At this time this brass will have to do, until this current HORDING situation has passed, and I can locate some better brass.

I have 1 box of 130gr Speer, and maybe 1 box of 150gr Nosler Partitions and several box's of 110gr Norma's, not what I want for this reamer, I'll get an adjustable throater and do it myself.

What info does your post provide ??
relating to my post of Spec's for grinding a reamer??

I know, I am capable of chambering my own weapons.

NV,

You're not alone - for a few years now I've noticed some WW brass coming out of rifle chambers with pre-web bulges that are, in my opinion, unacceptably large. A different brand of brass coming out of the same chamber did not exhibit the bulge. In their defense, the WW brass I've worked with tends to be fairly strong and of excellent quality if you spend the time to uniform it. It also tends to last fairly long IF the relationship btwn the brass/chamber/resizer works well and the brass gets worked minimally.

Investigation with a mic revealed that the WW brass head dimensions were about .002-.003" under the other brand measured, and I have seen this with other calibers made by WW, so it seems to be a trend from what I can tell, but my experience with it is limited to just a few chamberings.

Best thing to do (if you are still dead set on staying with the current brass) is to get in-touch with Dave Kiff at Pacific Tool and Gauge and let him guide you in designing a reamer that will be a better fit for that brass. You might end up needing some custom work done a resizer too.

Hope this helps

Uthink Uknow,

The fired cases have that bulged area just above the web,
I am hoping of getting the new reamer ground to reduce this bulge,
but I am not sure just how close I should spec the reamer for,
I am thinking about .001" bigger than the new case dimensions.

I know the SB die will resize the fired brass to the new case dimensions,
and I had planned on using this fired brass for testing load data,
and saving the new brass for shooting.

I would also recommend talking to either Dave Kiff at PTG or Dave Manson at Manson reamers. Either one of them are good to talk to and can get you going in the right direction.

Thanks,

Nightowl and Firearmdoc1,

I had planned on talking with DK, need to find the other PH #,
I have seen it on here, but can't locate it at this time.

I am glad, I am not the only one that noticed that the brass is a lot SMALLER than what SAAMI shows,
I play quite a bit with the Hornet cases and "The Bulge" really shows up there.

Tia,
Don

NV,

Contact PT&G and ask for Dave.

Here's the number: 541 826-5808

Don't know the number for Manson Reamers - try google.

Take care, buddy.
