Want to Get Into 22 Benchrest Shooting.

I recently retired and now want to get into shooting 22 benchrest. I do not know the first thing about it only that a year or so ago I was at a range that was having a 22 shoot.

What is the best way to get started? Can I get set up gun, scope for around a 3500 to 4,000 budget? I have read a little about the different actions. different ways they feed. Tunners. I just want to make sure I buy the best and right gun and scope for my money. I live outside of Portland Maine. If there is anyone that is in the area that can help me get started?

I live within 20 miles of you. if you want to meet up some time I can let you shoot my setups and give you some direction in which to look.

Talk to Peter Wass he's a maineiac also, and very knowledgeable. He used to shoot down here in the winter at my friend Jon's place occasionally.

I didn't see him at all last season. That doesn't mean he isn't around but he wasn't any any matches I was at. Keith (Linekin) would know more about him, I believe they shoot out of the same club.

Pete has not shot on any regular basis for some years.

Pete's home range was Capital City & directed IR matches there for several years. Ken said he still swings in occasionally but doesn't shoot. I believe he's sold his bench guns.
To the OP, there are sanctioned ARA matches in Buxton & Capital City. I'm planning on having some unsanctioned matches at Lincoln county this summer but I'm getting pulled in alot of directions right now.
As to your questions I wholeheartedly agree with Tim. There's some good used rifles out there & all in under your budget. You'll want flags & a decent rest too if you want to do it right. All of which as mentioned can be seen or tried at the matches.

There are multiple classes in benchrest depending on what organization you shoot with. I am mainly familiar with ARA and IBS. In ARA there is factory class and unlimited class. In IBS there are 3 classes, UL, Factory and custom. The rules are slightly (or in some classes hugely) different so, the best place to start is to choose what class you want to shoot in. That can be as simple as deciding how much you want to spend on gear to get started or based on several factors. My recommendation would be to start with factory class until you see if you like it and then decide where to go from there. I did the opposite, I started with UL because I already had a UL gun and now I shoot both classes. Check out the websites I link below, they will give you a lot of info. Feel free to reach out here again and someone will help you.

There are also other governing organizations....they just don't have any matches in my area.
