want to build a rifle for ME!

I ve never had anything other than factory rifles. All under $1000. Tired of trying to make then shoot good. Tired of after market cheek pieces. Just tired of having lots of budget rifles that don't fit me or my desires. Here are my desires. 1/2 moa or better with good hand loads. Bolt action. 24" medium contour fluted. Hunter/tactical stock w/ adjustable cheek and lop. Good scope. I like the nightforce nsx. Will hunt deer, coyotes to 500yards and want to start shooting paper to long range. 1000 prone someday. Thinking of rem700 sa 7-08 to start. No magnums. Thoughts?

A plain rem 700 is not going to be any different than a factory rifle. If you are on a budget, take one of your factory rifles and have it rebarreled by a good gunsmith and have it placed in a stock that suits your needs.

As for a stock to hunt, shoot tactical and prone, it's going to be hard to find one good for all! A good hunting stock should be light, a tactical stock should accommodate several shooting positions but with some extra weight and a stock for strictly prone won't be a good choice for the other 2 disciplines.

If you want to get away from factory you need to pick a custom action and a stock and decide if you want single shot or repeater.

Here are some action manufacturers to get your search going:
Kelblys, defiance, bat, Borden, pierce engineering, stiller, Barnard, etc.

For stocks you have:
McMillan, masterclass stocks, shurley brothers, Gary Eliseo (tube gun chassis), manners, etc.

+1 Totally agree w/above . The best way to "save" money ,I think, is to take a Rem. that you may have and have the action trued & rebarel it , in the cal. of choice and trigger(?), and comp. stock for compeating is a compromise but do-able . Why Rem.- because very easy to find aftermarket parts . Next step up is to search the classifides for what you want/can afford .

I like that Piece action. Budget? $4000 optics included. I plan to really really research this because that's a way lot of money for me. Probably the biggest issue is accuracy.

I have a Pierce in single shot on a 260AI I'm building and it seems to be very nice for the money and should retain it's resale value over a 700 that will be close to the same dollars invested by the time all is said and done to the 700. Other shooters on this site that I consider much more knowledgeable and experienced than I suggested Pierce and I'm glad I went that way.
Best Wishes

Please give serious consideration to one of the 6.5 Cal. rounds. Especially the 6.5 Creedmoor. Also you may want to consider two specialized stocks rather than a "one size fits all".

A custom build on a trued up 700 will shoot great. Boutique actions are really nice and a pleasure to own, it just depends on what you want to spend. 6.5 Creed or 7-08 would great choices!

+1 on what Lawrence said. You may consider the 284 win cartridge using the new Norma brass from Bullets.com. I and 2 friends shoot the Berger 168 VLD (7mm) for hunting, we have taken moose and elk at both long range and short range and they kill clean with good placement. Deer and antelope are easy to kill. My rifle is a 700 long action with a Krieger barrel, the other guys have Stiller action customs from GunWerks for their rifles. Our rifles shoot sub Moa at 600 yds. three shot groups. If I was going with the 7-08 I would use Lapua brass. You need 2 rifles one to hunt with and one for target, the target needs to be heavy for shooting strings at long range. My hunting rifle is 8 lbs, my F-class rifle is about 18 lbs. I do shoot out to 600 yds every year to check the scope before hunting about 4" groups.

Thanks folks, I'm glad I joined this forum. It nice to talk to people that are real shooters. I have a couple hunting buddy's but they are not what I'd call riflemen. One of them says he can hit deer to 500 with his 300 win mag without any hold over. Sights in on a rock at 50yds. Thing is he gets deer every year and is a real good guy. I'll continue my research and keep in touch.

Remington 700 long action 284 win 26" bartline barrel . I use lapua 6.5 284 brass. 1000yd not a problem

I was in a similar situation. I have always wanted a rifle that I knew would let me push MY limits by showing I was the weak link in the equation. Accuracy was utmost in my considerations so I found a smith that had great reviews. I went with Robert Snyder, RWS GUnsmithing, and have to say what he built for me exceeds my expectations. The rifle shows flaws in my shooting and my reloading practices and when I identify them my groups get even smaller. I recommend going with a custom your $4,000 budget is just fine for that, if you're not counting optics. Here is an example of how the rifle he built for me shoots. 5 shots, 100 yards off a bipod and rear bad. Hope this helps you make your decision.

What your 500 yard deer guys is NOT telling you is that he holds 3" UNDER the 50 yard rock, probably shoots a 168 MK at 3300 FPS because ...well...he can, and has a zero of about 425 yards. That would give him a drop of 12 inches at that 500 yard deer and POOF.....no holdover!!!

Just sayin.

Seems the more I read and research the more ignorant I discover I am. 46 years of rifle shooting and more questions that answers. Pretty settled on trued and blued rem700 s/a. Maybe. Wind is what kills me. I like the 7-08 but the 6.5 creedmoor looks to ride the wind alittle better. Will the creedmoor feed ok in the short action with long bullets?
