Want some opinions, which long range caliber for me??

I have been discussing with the guys on TFL and have come to no hard conclusions, here is a link to the original Thread:
http://thefiringline.com/forums/showthread.php?t=306287
So here are some choices that are high on my list,
264 Win Mag
243 Win,or AI)
6mm BR
6.5 X 284
6.5-06
220 Swift

I won't start building the gun for nearly 10 months but need to start planning/buying parts

Looking for an awesome caliber for Varmint hunting primarily from the bench and maybe start hanging out with the local BR guys at the range. Accuracy to 500+ yards in flat country with some windage, flat lands of Ohio and Prairie Dog towns in the Dakota's. . . .
HELP!!
Would list more details but they are already hashed over heavily in the Firing Line thread

THANKS
Karl

With prairie dogs on the menu, it rules out everything but the 6BR.

Although, I would look real hard at a 6 Dasher.

Or....I would also think about a switch barrel rig. One for the dogs, the other for kickin' local butt.

6.5 X 55 is on my list of CZ rifles to buy/build, in a sporter full length stock for a Deer/Elk rifle, don't want to double up calibers, there are soooo many choices out there, why have two of the same? Make them jealous at night whn the safe door closes:eek:

The 6mm BR is on the schools Reamer list, along with 243 win and AI, 264 WM, 6.5X284, 6mm Rem, 6mm Rem International, 6mm PPC, 220 Swift, 240 WTBY MAG, trying to stay with what I have available to use for free, save $$ for other parts. . .

Hope this helps

Thanks Again
Karl

BTW Any reason why one of these calibers is better or more capable? I understand that they all burn barrels, that doesnt matter to me a ton, Ease of loading, Varmint bullet selection and inherent accuracy and efficiency of the round mean the most.

for varmints and shooting alot, i think a 6mmbr would be the way to go. not fast enough, how about a 6mm dasher.BUT the 6mm br would work great! good luck cliffe

Alf? If you say it is overkill, well. . .I was unaware there was such a thing for PD's or groundhogs, as I know from first hand visuals that a 300 RUM does the job, but burns 3-4X the powder of the cartridges I am looking at;)
Perhaps I read you wrong here?

I have a 204 that will see all the action from 100 to 350 yards, with one confirmed kill at 285 yds here in Ohio, it has only been afield three times, and has proved itself to me for those ranges.

Yup, you read me wrong.

But you're right, no such thing as overkill on varmints.

My point is, you only have three viable options on your short list in regards to barrel life in the prairie dog towns. The PPC, Swift, and the BR. Of those, the 6 BR wins.

What was I to expect coming to 6mmbr.com, you guys talked me into what common sense, ballistics charts, and the record books have been telling me since I started thinking about this project. . . Sooo what kind of action do you all shoot suggest, from my list on TFL?
http://thefiringline.com/forums/showthread.php?t=306287

I am thinking the Ruger is highest on my list, with aftermarket trigger, and all the other bells, short action is about the only option with the 6mmBR. . .

What twist is optimal for 60-70 grain bullets, V-max and Match kings? Krieger BBL I'm thinkin. . . .Tell me what you know:thumb:

I would also look in to the 22BR. Flat shooting. Lots of good varmint bullets. You can get a higher BC bullet for the weight. Velocities, with the right powder choice) are pretty close to a 22-250. I'd say the 6BR has an accuracy edge and will have longer barrel life though.

A .204 and a 22BR would make a nice twosome for varmint fields.

243/243AI, either one will do whatever you want it to do in that catagory.Brass is cheap/easy to load and feeds good. If your ever stuck somewhere in a pinch, can get ammo almost anywhere.Have killed lots of pd's,groundhogs,deer,antelope,etc....... Do yourself a favor and get a faster twist, somewhere around 1-9,or1-8

I know this post is a little old, but if your still thinking about your build, I would highly recommend the 6BR. I just mine last weekend, and I am very impressed with how accurate it is. Go with the 6BR and never look back.
