What are some of you guys using for long range hogs (600+ yards) that have good expansion in a 6mm.

I know that getting the explosive effects of some of the flat base bullets is highly unlikely but I'd like to get cleaner kills than I have been. Using the 95g Berger VLD hunting now and it does ok but would like a little more pop. Tried the 87g Vmaxs but could never get them to act completely right.

Howdy !

In my 6mm wildcat, the 95's ( Sierra 95Mk and Berger 95 VLD ) were good on "soy beanus digestus " to near 400yd. I will admit, that I did not get a chance to try them futher out,
and have moved from NE Indiana; since. Still, I agree.... use of a heavier 6mm for 600-1,000
would be more appropriate.

Notionally..... design/construction/wt / attainable vel of 6mm bullets like 105hp's argue against the likelyhood of terminal "explosive" KE transfer @ the longer ranges.
Having a polymer tip on the bullet ( like the Hornady 107 "A"-MAx ) would help things, a bit.

In my .224" cal wildcat, I used the Hornady 75gr "A"-Max" for both paper and varmint.
Perhaps the 6mm "A"-Max could be applied similarly, for your circumstance ?

What's really needed ( IMHO ), is a powdered-metal core 6mm heavy VLD.
THAT would be the best way to bias the LR varmint equation towards explosive terminal effects.

Best of luck in your endeavors !

Thanks for the testimonial, Dogbone. But they are actually the 105 AMax. And they kill out to 1062 yards - that's as far as I can verify, with a starting velocity of 3100 fps.
I also meant to ask if the OP was referring to ground-hogs or feral hogs.

Groundhogs :D

I picked up a box of the 87g Berger hunting VLDs and I'll give the AMaxs a try and see how they do, might get a box of the Sierras next Sinclair order, thanks.

couldn't tell you about hogs, but the Berger 105g Hunting VLD on a coyote is excellent. And the 105g Amax on pdog size targets are explosive to say the least.

I killed 427 groundhogs this summer in Ohio with the 105 AMax. I didn't keep track of how many didn't move after being hit but it was a very high percentage.
