Walmart Ammo

I was at the Mall tonight with the kids and
noticed Walmart is selling Federal Fusion ammo
at $5.00 or $ 6.00 a box Cheaper than my local shop
and they had quite a bit in different calibers..30-06 -243- 308 I was wondering is it the same ammo or does Walmart
have special runs of ammo made for them ??

Your local dealer is more than likley paying more for it than Walmart is selling it for.

this is strictly a rumor that i have heard several times from gun dealers that own their own shops, they claim that wal mart ammo is a different so called "cheaper run of ammo". they tend to call it "floor sweapings". They also tell me that wal mart ammo will be denoted by a special prefix for the item or product number on the box...i once heard an example that winchester may have a number on the box like 64517 denoting the product number but wal marts would be K64517...i have never researched this to try to prove or disprove this claim...like i said earlier this is strictly a rumor. seems like everytime i go to wal mart i forget to look at the ammo to see if this is true. but truthfuly i havent personaly purchased factory ammo in 20yrs. since i started reloading...nothing against factory ammo...i just tend to reload for everything i shoot excluding rimfire.

It's a simple example of "economies of scale". Walmart buys far more product and gets a far cheaper rate. It is that simple.

The ammo is the same, as stated wallys world makes deals by the train load and the price "they" will pay even if the MFG is taking a hit on profit margin, they make up for in the amount of sales wallys can make for them.
All you hear about "its not the same" is 100% BS!

I think both answers are true. I used to buy Winchester 12 gauge 7/8 oz loads at Walmart in large quantities for trap shooting. I tried to buy the same load from my local shop. He could not find the product number at any of his distributors and there was no equivalent load listed either. Consequently, I came to the conclusion that Winchester manufactured the load specifically for Walmart.

That is what I Thought Walmart gets the pricing because
of volume of thier purchase. I to reload but I have a Sako 308
That loves the Fusion 150gr and has never failed on paper or on
a deer. I ck my zero before hunting 1 to 3 shots and the rest is in
the field with confirmed animals from 95 to 175 yrds so far with that
rifle I had heard the rumor of the (seconds ammo )but thought why would
Federal open themselves up to the complaints of unsatisfied customers
who bought thier ammo at Walmart

I was in store management in 2001-2002. Wal-Mart pressures the manufacturers to lower their margins for the volume. Wal-Mart also lowers their own margins to make sales. There are some items in the store that Wal-Mart is intentionally losing money on in order to get the consumer into their store by the lure of lower prices.

Once per week, when I was there, department managers or assistant managers, were required to take a scan tool to competitors in the area and scan similar merchandise and document the price. The individual store would then lower those prices to beat their competitors.

Nosler manufactures certain lines of their Trophy grade ammo for Midway, as do other manufactures for Wal-Mart.

Manufacturers often make special run products for big box stores. They will do this to meet a certain price point set (or forced) by the store (usually by cheapening materials or components).

Often this means that the product you buy at the big box store is not the same product you would buy at a smaller specialty store. Same brand, different models. I believe Walmart was a pioneer of encouraging this practice (as well as encouraging the off shoring of production, but that's another rant.)

I have no idea if this applies to ammunition.

I don't care how they do business, they employ local people,
and as a consumer I get the most for my dollar.
I'll shop there and compare prices, if theirs are lower I'll make the purchase.

pheww, good to know that this stuff won't fail on paper. How about cardboard? At my local range, they usually have cardboard behind the paper target, and I wouldn't want 150gr Fusion bullets t to bounce off.

As to the idea that Federal would cheapen the load for Walmart, that is pure bullsh*t, and anybody who spouts such tales should be ignored and avoided.

Here's an apt comparison. You can buy USDA "prime" meat at Costco, for probably 30%-100% less than at smaller meat markets. Is it because Costco isn't getting real USDA "prime" meat? No. It's because Costco buys and sells more of it than anybody else in the country. I'm not opposed to smaller stores selling stuff for a profit. I am opposed to stores (large or small) who try to sell rumors and uncertainty. Leave that to the liberals. It's a plank of their agenda.

Not to pour more fuel on the fire but ive often heard the same about the firearms wal-mart sells. ;D

On another note a gunsmith once told me that in normal production line firearms its often common for a company to get the equipment started producing actions,barrels and once the machine is fine tuned that the actions and barrels that meet the closest to the tolerances are often set aside for their tactical and varmint models. He mentioned remington does this for alot of their tactical and varmint actions. The ones that meet specs the closest get set aside in a different box for use on higher end models and the ones that are not as tight but still fall within specs are often used for lower end models such as ADL models verses varmint models. I know while working in the printing business when we got the machine fine tuned we would often hand pick the best copies to go to the customers for evaluation and to their main headquater store locations. The not so good copies were sent to be inserted in to newspapers. This was common practice and encouraged by the company

I know for a fact marlin did make or still makes a model you can get only at walmart.

And what jpmidas said::my dad had a store in a smallish town. Walmart did scan his store all the time and lowered prices. He even folowed them back to wallmart wanting to know who they were. A few years later he sold the store and the new owners went out of business due to miss management. Walmart raised their prices within a few weeks. We talked about this all the time.They give you a deal if they have to. (But not me ever) They are like a cancer. But few care the just want that "good deal"

I just sit back and have to laugh,.....None of you know what your talking about!!! except maybe nosualc, and newgun for your patriotic values, I agree with both of your views!!! as far as the rest of you,....totally clueless, I work for a large ammunitions maker and if you only new the truth about Wall-Mart and Cabelas and other big chain stores, ......deals are made! your all just spouting off your opinions, when in fact you don't really know!

Well, clue in the clueless! I only spoke of my experience in the Wal-Mart store as a member of management. That experience was 10 years ago, and their practices may have changed in the past decade.
