Not sure I'll make this one. I'm a little burnt out. :-)

Oh, it does die down in the early morning, sometimes. Then it sneaks up behind you and fishtails rapidly at 20-30 mph.

Sometimes it blows so hard that the target uprights just snap off.

Rumor has it that some Palma team types are going to be there for wind-coaching practice in the wind, in preparation for their upcoming Worlds next year. So lets hope the 'Snake doesn't disappoint! :D

Yep, but Veterans team coaches thing not Palma. I'm coming all the way from North Carolina. And yes, wind will be OK, I'd hate to go all that way and get Butner type winds  Anyway, looking forward to the experience.

Well, hopefully it isn't like it was in I think 2015... 110F by 11 am, with 1-3 mph 'breeze'

It made up for it that October... with winds bad enough that we had shooters dropping because they either ran out of windage on their sights, or couldn't hold steady in the gusts :D

See ya there! Sent my registration in today.

Forgive me if I'm mistaken here... but I thought you guys were associated with the PALMA team?
Sorta, kinda, loosely. We are all under the umbrella of the U.S. Development team from which all other teams (Palma, Veterans, and U25) are selected. There are tryouts for shooters and coaches from the development team that would like to be on the Palma, Vets, U25 etc. as well as tryouts to get on the Development team. What we're doing next weekend is developing coaching strategies for the Vets team with Gary Rasmussen, Steve Hardin, Dave Crandall and myself. This is no guarantee of a coaching position but helps to get familiar with higher winds which we don't have much of on the East coast and are expecting to see in New Zealand. New Zealand is a long way to go to lose because you weren't prepared. Hope to see you next week.

RESULTS:

I wasn't there, so I don't have any amusing anecdotes to share, but by 2nd hand accounts, the wind was at level "Rattlesnake", to 30+mph at times with some fun fishtailing thrown in for good measure.

I believe this is Todd Branin's 2nd win in as many years. The competition for sling in WA is ridiculously tough and to win two years in a row is really a great accomplishment.

In F-Open, Tod Hendricks was on fire - usually in these matches, the F-Open scores and the Sling scores track very closely, but in this case, Tod blew right past everyone. I couldn't be there this year and maybe I'm a bit glad for that... :) A 45X count in those kind of conditions is almost superhuman - take a look at the X-counts around him and you'll see what I mean.

Jerry Teo followed up his win at at the WA State Palma Championship last month with another win this past weekend. The opportunity to sweep the registered LR matches in WA and take them all home to Canada is there if he can make it down to Rattlesnake in Oct. for the LR Regional... :)

Sling:
  • Todd Branin, 960-33X, MW
  • Anette Wachter, 955-25X, 1HM
  • Michael Storer, 926-19X
F-Open:
  • Tod Hendricks, 976-45X, MW
  • Greg Deleenheer, 958-27X, 1M
  • Jeremy Smith, 926-19X
FTR:
  • Jerry Teo, 925-14X, MW
  • Bill Prue, 921-15X, 1M
  • Praveen Kumar, 915-9X

EDIT: I don't know why it says "... Palma and Creedmore Championships" on the score sheet. This was a 100 x 1000 format. My guess is that the MD just re-used the same reporting template from last month.

The typical 'Dorothy & Toto' winds were on Friday, during the practice (gusts over 35 mph). Saturday and Sunday had relatively mild 5-10 mph winds, quartering from 4 o'clock thru 8 o'clock. Fairly easy to see when you were up in a chair watching thru a spotting scope. Down on the ground watching thru the same scope... not so much, at least not for me. Pretty much one of those days where every shot felt like it was a sighter...

It was still a pretty good time :D

Yes. Tod Hendricks was on fire. Exceptional shooting. Conditions were challenging and humbling for me. Having never shot a 7 in competition before, having 4 in one string made me want to pack up and go home.

In sling, Annette was also shooting well and her last string was 10 points off her other strings. I'm pretty sure one one shot took the championship away from her. Im not taking anything away from Todd Branin, but Todd and Annette were very close.

A couple pics from the weekend for those that have never been to Rattlesnake.
