VV 100 vs. 500 powders

Just watched this short video from VihtaVuori talking about the differences between the 100 series and 500 series powders. I use N120, N135, N140, and N150 powders for my various loads for Silhouette.

The one thing that caught my attention is they say that the 100 series powders has better lot-to-lot consistency than the 500. I find that rather interesting.

The lot to lot consistency of a double base powder is more difficult because of the processing and the requirement to test-adjust-test issues with hitting several simultaneous values.

Making materials like this is like making sausage, most folks don't want to know what goes into it as long as it tastes good. YMMV

All recent additions to the 500 series (eg N555 and N565) were made to be 'temperature insensitive' from the off. Then, around the same period a few years ago, the company announced that all older products in the 'High Energy' range had likewise been treated or reformulated, or whatever it was that was done to achieve this.

Older (2012) N550 that I'm using up these days is significantly temperature affected. Some N100s appear to be less affected than others, N150 for instance. There were rumours around a few years ago that all N100s were following in the upgrade process, and some (including N150) had in fact been 'done', but that has gone very quiet. As with so many things, the pressure that Gospodin Putin's 'Special Military Exercise' in Ukraine has put on maximising Viht output to meet military demand, has likely stopped any product changes.

The N500 line for me has been the best for temp stability lot to lot. I've rarely bought in one pound containers so it hasn't been an issue. When I ran out of N133 recently I noticed quite a change in the new lot. Also one of my favorites N135 seemed to get better on my last buy. The Hodgdon line continues to amaze me with single digit ES so it'll be hard when my supply of Hodgdon runs out.

I've been running a lot of N-135 as I'm switching over and working with
newer wild cats. Impressed with the lower ES and SD's across the board.
N-135 has been very very good to me in UBR comp this year in 3 cartridges. N-540 has been great in several hunting cartridges for me but I wouldn't compete with it due to the high flame temp.
