Vudoo 22 Magnum

I just took delivery of a Vudoo 22 magnum. From the ammo I’ve tested Hornady V-Max and Aguila Silver Eagle shoot the best out of it. The Silver Eagle shoot good out of all my 22 mags. I’m looking forward to shooting prairie dogs with this thing.21DBA540-5A54-4F8C-BCF7-707EF0B9D01C.jpegA98802CB-6761-4822-9684-1F0CF2DD57EE.jpeg

The 22 mag is one of my favorite ”spot and stalk” PD guns. Doesn’t scare them away so much and they explode better than 17 HMR I tried. When I was building this rifle PD shooting was what I was thinking. Not to heavy but still accurate enough to shoot that type of target.

I’m getting an average of 1/4“ 5 shot groups now at 50 yards. It’s either me getting used to the gun or the barrel is settling down because it’s shooting better and better with the Hornady 30 gr. V-Max loads. Vudoo has done their own testing on barrel twists and decided on a 1-12 twist which is faster than the normal 1-16 most manufacturers use. I’m pretty sure the faster twist will help keep groups smaller at longer range like 100 yards and farther.

more testing is needed.

.25 groups are something I've not seen from a .22 Mag and it makes the spending a couple of grand a lot more reasonable for a caliber not generally recognized as inherently accurate. Maybe the twist rate is the key...? That's pretty impressive in my opinion.

Here are some of the targets I was shooting. Hornady’s 30 grain V-Max loads seem to shoot the best so far.
i Still think the Aquila Silver Eagles will shoot much better than I’m showing here. The last two groups shown were Hornady. On a different subject. I used to have a Volquartsen auto and they said to shoot the Winchester 32 grain loads, I think they were 32 grains, that was a bullet that I think Winchester made and were very accurate and super explosive on prairie dogs. Does anyone know where I can get more of these? I don’t know if they are still being produced but Volquartsen cut their chambers specifically for these cartridges back in the day, around 2000, and they shot well and I was hopeing to find some more of them To try in the Vudoo 22 mag. These are all 5 shot groups at 50 yards. I shot the one target with only one shot so I would have a clean hole to measure.

I ordered in a V22 bbl'd action in 22 Mag for a friend/customer in April of 2020. The only feedback I've gotten from him was that he's happy with it....

That’s awesome Dan !! I’ve got two now 22LR and 17HMR and a third on the way in 17HM2 and wait to get it put together and tune it up for next springs Sagerats..

Dan, I've never been enough of a fan of the WMR to own a rifle chambered for it - only gun I own that will shoot this round is an old model Ruger Single Six Convertible with an extra cylinder for the 22WMR. I guess the #1 reason is that I was always too cheap to pay the price of WMR ammunition, and the #2 reason would be the round's reputation for less than stellar accuracy - but your new V22 kind of puts that concern to rest, now doesn't it? There are several guys over on RFC who've got CZ 457s (and the older 455 action) in 22WMR, and most of them are well satisfied - but I've never seen any group photos from any of them that come close to the results you're getting. However, seeing as how I'm a resolute believer in Vudoo quality (I have four V22 repeaters & two V22S single shots), I'm not all that surprised that your V22M shoots as well as it does.

I really admire your choice of components; partially because I put a V22 light sporter together myself a few years ago. Ordered a bbl'd action with an ACE 18" Ranch contour bbl, then put it into a Manners EH2 stock, with a Jewell HVR trigger, and finished it by mounting an Athlon Midas BTR Gen 2 4.5-27x50 30mm scope. The ACE Ranch bbl shot really well, but it was so light that the rifle was quite butt-heavy, even though the Manners stock has a carbon fiber shell. I finally decided to replace the Ranch bbl with a Krieger #4 sporter finished at 22", which is very similar to the Spectre contour, with muzzle dia being .704" compared to the Spectre's .680" muzzle. It now balances right at the front of the PTG Stealth DBM, and weighs just over 9lbs w/o a magazine. The only thing I've done to it since I took the attached photo is to shoot the bbl with graphite black CeraKote.

50+yrs ago, the hardest decision I had to make on a summer Sunday would be which dog town to go shoot in - but nowadays, the vast majority of them have been poisoned out, and the few towns that are left are so over-hunted that it's not worth bothering to go try my luck. Getting one shot per hour is not my idea of fun... But if we still had the dog populations that I enjoyed hunting back in the late 1960s, I'd take a serious look at building a rifle just like yours...

I’ve always been a fan of the magnum. They come in the same size rifle as 22 LRs and the ones I’ve owned have shot well. Not quite this well but 1/2” 50 5 shot group good. I’ve had CZ 455 tricked out, Lila barrel headspace to my bolt and bedded and so on. It didn’t make the grade. Anschutz 22 magnum shot pretty good. Not 1/2” 50 yard good on regular basis. Volquartsen, I love a semi auto 22 magnum in prairie dog fields. Volquartsen s have a lot of potential but again no 50 yard 1/2” with any regularity. I now own a Zephyr II that shoots to my 1/2” standard regularly with a smattering of 1/4” groups. It seems Vudoo found an accurate combination when it comes to a 12 twist barrel and a 22 cal. 30 grain v-max Bullet. This rifle/ammo combination is destined for greatness. The Vudoo shoots better than any 22 magnum I’ve ever shot. Regularly shooting 1/4” groups. I wish Anschutz would produce the 1727 in 22 magnum. Those rifles are built well with a trigger that will ruin you.
THESE ARE THE GOOD OLD DAYS.

that’s a good looking walking hunter. I’d shoot it.476A0C7D-D79C-406D-9FCE-7B814FA44F92.jpeg

It took a while to figure the components for this rifle. I wanted one light enough to carry and hopefully balance right. The weight of everything was figured and studied. I lucked out in that this rifle balances right at the forward action screw. So it’s light between the hands. The hardest thing I dealt with was deciding on barrels length. I wanted to get the full power/velocity of the magnum loads but not have a long gangly looking barrel sticking out there with a can on it. Well the longer barrel paid off in helping to balance well.

I lucked out. The gun feels lighter than it actually is due to the right balancing point.

Obviously Vudoo has brought us a new level of accuracy In the rimfire world and while it is true that one or two groups don’t make a trend it’s nice to see when 2 rimfire rifles in different cartridges of equal quality give us this type of accuracy. It also makes me wonder, with a faster twist rate, new powder technology and bullets Hornady have not YET invented/ showed us, just what the 22magnum is capable of? Vudoo, Hornady, what IS the 22 magnum capable of?

It is a pity that no ammunition manufacturer has got around to putting a decent projectile in 22 Magnum cartridges like an ultrathin jacketed Vmax for instance with a BC of 221 roughly that is when I will buy a 22 Magnum until then I will with what I have it's a shame because these days there's a market for that just waiting for it

Vudoo uses a 1-12 twist. The standard, since 1955 or so was 1-16. We need to start asking for and buying 22 magnums that are designed with current technology, not 50s tech.

This thread has turned out to be the history of how my Vudoo 22 magnum is shooting. The following is an example of how it is shooting at 100 yards. I shot a couple groups at my local range where I have to deal with wind at the bottom of a canyon. I usually shoot this rifle on my own property where wind is not a major issue. On my second group I fired a shot and then the wind started slowing down then went quiet. First shot is out of group. Then the wind mostly died down and I shot the following 5 shot group. It’s starting to show some potential.D7967D4B-A124-4490-AFEE-5F3231450A23.jpeg
