Vortex Viper

Considering a 6.5-20X50 with the BDC (MOA) reticle. These are a 30mm tube. The last Vortex thread the search engine gave me was from 2012. So, any opinions on these? Also where would you look to purchase one? I've found them for 499.99 with free shipping but I've never used a Vortex period. This will go on an open field hunting rifle in 270 Winchester plus I'm sure to plink some steel out to 600 yards max. Thanks guys.

I have the 24X scope on my Tikka Dasher. I’ve shot that rifle all the way to 1000 yards using that scope, including this seating test .

I have an older 4-14 Viper HS and a newer Viper PST II 5-25. Both are decent scopes with good enough glass for what I use them for. Turrets are repeatable and they are light weight. They are reasonably priced and I think a good value. I've not looked through the new Viper HD yet but the reviews are quite positive.

I have a Viper PST II 5-25 on one of my hunting rifles and it's a really nice scope. Honestly can't see a whole lot of difference in it vs my Razor, especially considering the money difference. I have the EBR 7C MOA reticles on both the Viper and Razor.

That is a somewhat dated scope. I think you can find them used or even new for less. I would invest in one of the newer Viper HDs. If you have Expert Voice, you can get them for much less than the sticker price you see, or if you're ex-military, LE, first responder, etc.

DVOR occasionally has them for really good prices too.

Alas, I haven't had the privilege of shooting the Viper series yet.

I've been shooting the Crossfire II and first gen Diamond Back for some years now.

First off, the lower series from Vortex flare out easily.
I'd recommend an objective shade.

Second, the BDC that I have don't exactly align with the bullet weight (BC) and velocity that is recommended with the scope paperwork.
Sighted in at 200 yards, it does align with my 7mm-08AI and a 140gr bullet at 2,800fps.
If I recall, the paperwork is stating a 150gr bullet out of a 7mm Rem Mag. Obviously a better BC at a faster velocity.

Been selling Vortex scopes for about 10 years now at a retail store.

I have 3 Vortex PST II 5-25X. Great scope but the price range is a little high for the everyday shooter and the FFP is not good for short range shooting/hunting (SFP would be better)
When Vortex came out with the Diamond back Tact 5-25X, FFP. I looked at it and compared it to my PST II's. I gotta tell you I was impressed for a $400.00 scope. It had all the features of the PST II without the lite reticle and the $900.00 price tag. I have shot it out to 1000 yds and it works great.

Just my opinion......

I have 2 of them. One is an original with the fine wire plex. The other is a newer model with a MD. They are ok. The older one has better glass than the newer one. My eyes are starting to go so I needed scopes with a lot more power.

I have never had a single problem with either of them. They are the scopes I grab if I think another scope is having problems.

I have a viper hst on a rifle i just shoot at range. I also now have 2 viper hd scopes on hunting rifles. I have no issues with any of them.

I bought a pair of the Viper 6.5-20x40 something. Worst glass of any scope I've bought, even a Mueller APV was nicer. One went down the road the other had a nice varmint dot and got used for under 200 yard targets. I bought a Crowwfire 6-24x50 and it was a beast, it was gone in a heart beat. and have shied away from vortex ever since, I find the Sightron (S-1 and S-tac) line much nicer for the money and on lower end scopes the Athlon has served nicely Argo 2-12

Look at reviews for all scopes and it'll be a 50/50 review regardless what scope it is. Hard to beat Vortex for the money but there are other scopes as good or better in roughly the same price range. Sightron STAC is definitely one of them. That said the Viper line is a very good hunting scope in most hunters hands.

I have three Viper PST's and could not be happier. Nearly as clear as my Razors for 1/5 the the price works out too1300 yards.
