VMAX OR BERGER VARMINT COMPARISON

Which bullet hits harder and is more destructive on a p-dog in your opinion ? Comparing 17 cal 25gr bullets - 20 cal 40gr bullets - and 22 cal 50gr bullets ! Which is more accurate ? Remember we are only comparing the VMAX and the BERGER Varmint bullets . THANKS

I haven't had the opportunity to use them on game, yet. But, I hope you guys are right on the Vmax 40 gr. because I have a "screamer" load with them in my .20P.

Why in the world would you leave out the 20 cal 39gr BlitzKing??? The 39BK is the best 20 cal bullet ever made! Just messin around...well not really. ;)

But if I must, I would say the 40gr V-Max in a fast 20 cal is the best. Very explosive at high speeds

I shoot .22 cal. 50 and 55gr. Vmax, 1/2 MOA/100yds. they pretty much destroy a Pd. Dead is dead. Have not shot the Bergers.

Both brands work extremly well in my opinion.I think what it boils down to is,which bullet shoots the best in your gun.I will say in the 17 the 25V-Max
takes destruction to the next level,it is a game changer in my opinion.Try em in your gun and see.In the 20 the 40V-Max has the best bc,but who knows maybe the Sierra Blitz King will shoot better:D

I’ve shot all the bullets mentioned in this thread and my experience in 17, 20, and 22 cals is the Vmax/Zmax bullets are the most explosive. Bullet weights haven’t seemed to matter much by way of the carnage delivered to pdogs. To save a few bucks I shoot the Zmax bullets when I can.

I have shot a lot of both in both calibers and weights you describe. I got equally good (but not better) accuracy with the Bergers, but the V-Max (I use the Z-Max volume packs) are like half the price and more explosive.

Don't forget the Speer TNT also. In 17 the MEF Berger or 20 g vmax is explosive.
Careful how fast you push them TNT bullets in the lightest weights, they WILL come apart. Haven't had it happen personally but a good friend had them ruin an AR by coming apart BEFORE exiting his barrel, leaving fragments in the barrel. Upon shooting his next round, the pressures increased tremendously from those fragments littering the rifling and his lower receiver literally blew up blowing the mag out of the well and in pieces as well as making the receiver a bit round on the sides. Never saw anything like it. He as using Speer TNT .224 bullets in their lightest configuration thru a 9 twist AR. They had a warning at one point about it but apparently he did not get that info. Speer TNTs are very explosive but the Vmax is tough to beat.

Good reminder on the fast twist barrels 284. I've never run into that on varmint setups but it can happen if spun too fast. Berger lists recommended twists in their manual per bullet weight.

Which hits harder ? either one, I bet the critter can not tell you even. Which is more accurate ? Only your rifle and the load you work up will tell you that.
As too which is more damaging or explosive, the V-max 99 out of 100 times is, for sure. Bill K

I have shot a few PD with .17 25gr BV 3700, does well, and a few with 55gr BV in 223., very good. But I have only killed two jacks with my 204 factory Vmax 40gr, HOLY SHIT, very very destructive. I think it will vaporize a PD.

Try both in your rifle. See what happens. But, from a cost perspective, v-max all the way.

I just did load workups for a BAT/Krieger 20VT using 32 gr Zmax bullets, 35 gr Berger and 39 gr Sierra Blitzking. In this rifle all three were essentially equally accurate. Got similar results with a Cooper in the same caliber. Since the Zmax bullets are $55 for 500 and the other two are double that, it is an easy choice.

Overall I too would agree the V/Zmax bullets are the most explosive, but the Nosler, Sierra and Berger's all do a nasty number on sage rats. Cost is the driving force for my varmint bullet selection these days.
