VLD chamferer?

Does it make any difference if I use my VLD chamfer tool on non VLD bullets instead of the old school tool? I normally load plain old hornady 55gr fmj bt in my M4. I have a new case prep station that came with a VLD chamfer tool. If not I can try and find the older tool for it. I of course have the rcbs hand tool that came with my original kit.

Just fyi I load for hunting or target pactice no serious compition yet in rifle. I load for .223/5.56 , 6mm remington and 30.06. But mainly.223/5.56

Thanks..

The vld is a better way of doing is my belief .
The bullet is easier to seat . Larry

Yup. No harm done with the steeper angle. I try not to cut too much. You can form a razor's edge on your brass, pretty easily.

I agree with Larry but for me I use both, first the regular, then the VLD and that creates a double angle chamfer which makes any bullet easier to enter the case mouth and be pushed into the case neck. This process however, leaves a sharp edge inside the case mouth where the 2 angles meet and cut the brass. I then also jam the case mouth into a pad of 0000 steel wool after doing the double chamfer. As I rotate the case back and forth while being pushed into the steel wool pad, I can actually feel the inner sharp edge smooth out and can definitely feel the difference when seating bullets. JMHO

It's the only kind I use.

Thanks.. Yes it cuts very fast.. Sooo happy I can put some of the old hand tools away..I have a lot of LC brass but removing the crimps as you all know by hand is a horrible job. Lately I stopped doing it and have just been reloading my .223 brass so I wouldn't have to do it. The machine is so nice on the hands..

Once again thanks for your time...

Wonder if an expander die like the 21st Century wouldn't take care of those crimps quickly?? Just a thought.

Me too...I have the Lyman one because at the time I bought it that was the only one available. For all I know that might be the only one in existence. Nevertheless, it's the one I have and the point being, it threads right onto my RCBS case prep thing. Works perfectly, by the way. I will add that I do not use it to remove primer crimps. I am sure it will, but I have always used the RCBS swager for that task and I have "de-crimped" tens of thousands of them.

Nope, but I wouldn't recommend using the 45* on VLDs unless you want some possible jacket scarring issues.

VLD =very low drag
It was designed for VLD bullets and usually its at a 22* angle.
Traditional deburring tools are usually 45*
I might add the Lyman Case Prep Xpress comes with the VLD (not the standard 45*)

I tried a VLD chamfering tool and decided I didn't like it and went back to my old Wilson. Thought the VLD tool took too much metal going down the neck leaving less length for neck tension seating really long in a short neck case. Maybe it really didn't matter but I felt better about it.

I maybe look at it differently from some. I chamfer so there aren't any sharp edges on the neck mouth to damage my bullets when seating. Flat or boat tail base will all seat easily as long as I get neck tension reasonable. I use the Wilson VLD tool because I can adjust it with the micrometer tool to give the barest noticeable cut on the neck & that it addresses the case square on. The benefit that comes of that is that is that I don't apply excessive or eccentric cutting force doing the job so no burrs are created. Finally, I power the cutter with a dinky little 3.6 volt cordless driver which means I only have to concentrate on the rate I approach the neck, not that and the rate I'm turning a handle.

I bought 2 of the VLD chamfer tools and cut one off to do military crimps with it. You only have to spin it a few times to remove the military primer crimp and you are ready to seat your primers.

I use a rcbs 3 ways cutter that I changed the inside cutter to a vld angle .
When I I anneal I trimb and cut neck the same every time . Because the cutter is fixed every case is the same. But the inside is a vld angle. All my cutter are the same.
