Viper Barrel Vise and Proof Sendero Barrel

Borrowing a co-workers Viper Barrel Vise (4 bolt version) to install a Proof Sendro carbon fiber shouldered pre-fit barrel. I've never done an installation before. My concern is marring. I've read that using leather around the barrel should help with barrel slipping inside vise. Are there any other tips and tricks? Instead of using all four bolts to tighten down vise, will using just the front bolts (bolts closest to the action) be more beneficial?

I have a Wheeler barrel vise with just 2 bolts to clamp the barrel in place, and I've used 3x5 index cards, to remove the Savage flat black OEM barrels, some slight marring of the finish but that was on the OEM barrel. New barrels were SS, and no issues or marring when installing the new one. I've read that sheetrock tape will work just as well, and I have a roll here for the next project, but have not used the tape.

For removing OEM barrels you do need to crank down HARD because they gorilla torque them on.

But when I'm installing a new barrel, I don't go crazy clamping down the new barrel. I'm only torqueing a new barrel to between 60-80 fti-lbs. I clamp it down beyond snug, but just tight - not crazy

I wrap the new barrel in a piece of paper grocery bag to prevent any marking. No issue yet with painted / cerakoted barrels.

I've never done a carbon barrel though.

As Dave mentioned, be careful. Just clamp on the cylinder section and you'll be fine. Paper towel or toilet paper center grip without marring. Lightly lube the threads and clean the reciever threads before trying the barrel on by hand first.

I have wondered how a CF barrel would work in a vise. Nice to know this info, even though I will probably never use a CF barrel.
Grip the barrel on the cylinder section in front of the action. If you clamp on the CF you will hear a distressing sound when the bond between the CF and the steel breaks free.

I use grocery bag paper or rock tape and lead. The lead forms to 100% contact and the paper bites hard. It solved having a bunch of bushings.
