Vintage Scope Recomendations

I'm in need of a gloss scope with >20x magnification. I realize most of these are going to be older vintage models. Is there a vast difference in quality between the following brands?

Leupold
Burris
Bausch & Lomb
Bushnell
Weaver
other considerations?

I don't compete, just an avid shooter and want a nice vintage optic to put on a classic rifle used for punching paper.

Look for an older Leupold 24X. Had one sold it last year for $300.00 it was an 1" scope.
Moving on to 30 mm or larger scopes now.

Redfield 3200's are surprisingly clear. At least the 20x I have is. They just look right on a vintage target rifle, too.

I have a very nice, vintage Leupold 12x that was converted to a 24x, probably by Wally Seibert or Bill Ackerman many years ago, no ring marks, perfect glass and a fine crosshair reticle in the second plane. Asking 250 shipped.

Just bought and installed a 4x12 Redfield w/AO. It's gloss with lens covers. Beautiful, like new and really looks good on my pre-war M-70 25-06. I formerly used the gun for deer, antelope, gophers and prairie dogs, now mostly gophers. But I have enough scope for antelope and prairie dogs. Don' be afraid of the older Redfields, they are available and reasonably priced.

Vintage - I'm thinking late seventies, early eighties.

I'd let it go for $430 shipped. I would refund $400 if for any reason you don't like it.

Every scope they have done has comes back fantastic in all regards. They can even change the reticles if you like. The price is about $100 per scope return shipped. The only down-side is their turn-around time is 5 months. I bought a Redfield 2x-7x & a 3x-9x at the last gunshow for $25 each. I'm having duplex's installed in both. I'm looking for a nice 4x-12x as my next refurbish project.

Bausch & Lomb 6x24 or Balvar 6x24 or redfield target 3200

I have a couple of Bausch and Lomb 36s, a 4000 and a 4200, the last 36 that they offered. Both have better glass than a 36X Leupold that I had a chance to try. Wally Siebert told me that they have the best light transmission of any of the scopes that were available at the time. IMO they are a very high quality scope in all respects, made in Japan. Your might check with Bob White at Shooters Corner for used scopes.

Sorry but no. 65swede and I consummated a very nice deal with each other and he now has the scope. He was great to deal with, and I was too. I hope he's happy with it. There are quite a few old and nice scopes around now that everybody's going to 30 mm and such. You shouldn't have much problem. jd

All of those brands have some good stuff. I still have a bunch of them. The 24x Leupold has a narrow field of view too narrow for anything but target shooting. Burris Signatures are very good,I have a slew of them, made in USA with USA glass. Pentax, made by Burris with Japanese glass. Bausch&Lomb 6-24 Elites are very good. Bushnell Elite series objective focus scopes, even the Scopechief 6-20 (I have one and like it very much) are good and Japan made so far as I know. The Weaver V series are good, I've several 4-16's, been using some of them for 30yrs. Nikons are also very good. Simmons made a 6-24 target/varmint scope, I've been using one for over 30yrs, and the Presidential series was also very good. And even Tasco, known for cheap scopes, had some that were good. All pre-Chinese, all have 1" tube / objective focus. Lots of good ones out there, keep your eyes open.

I have one of these Redfields as well. Great scope in every aspect. I have had it since 84 with zero problems. It also has the accutrack system.

For the money, I don't think that you can beat a 20x or 25X Lyman.

I am in complete agreement with Jagermeister on the Lyman scopes. I am always on the lookout for the Lyman 25X LWBR scopes. I have quite a few older benchguns with Hart actions and these scopes just seem to be the perfect choice for them.
