Vintage Eley Ammo??

I got a thousand rounds of this stuff at our gun show a few years back. I assume it is Eley, and of the date shown on the box. Does anyone know more about it than that? jd

Frankly I haven't shot any of it. I got it back when 22's were pretty rare. Don't remember what I paid, but it wouldn't have been too much, cause I'm an intolerable tight wad.

Maybe I'll have to do a test on them. Or sell them as antique. That was the year I graduated from high school, so where's that put me. jd

Imperial Metal Industries (Kynoch). So, yes, Eley. The old factory was great. They had the only 50 yd outdoor range in Birmingham, which the local small-bore clubs used at least annually.

Yes, that's Eley. The packaging shows it was made for the MOD rather than the civvy market. A pic of the cartridges might enable identification of the product.

With this ammo and my slow lock 52 with a shortened stock, Kmart spotting scope and canvas hand me down coat I was deadly. Or thought I was...
To my knowledge this was lowest grade ammo eley made. As for price new I can't imagine what it might have been but it couldn't have been much. My dad would never buy tenex for himself and like father like son, I ain't paying $20.00+ a box for 22 ammo!

I would think that if it was kept dry it would be good to go' imho

All the Eley I have that's more than 10yrs old has bullet lube that's gotten flakey. It gets to looking dried-out, and when run through most mag fed rifles, a good deal of it flakes off the bullet. I read something about a product that softens & renews old Eley lube here some time back, and there was enough positive feedback on the mention of it that I took it to be genuine. I've got some old Match Xtra That was outdated when I bought it about 20yrs ago, plus some Eley Target (yellow label) that's almost as old, and it all needs something done to it to be useful. Wish I could remember the name of the stuff that supposedly renews the old lube...

I had a few ancient boxes of Eley Tenex that had dried up lube. I relubed them with Thompson's Bore Butter (just because that's what I had handy on the workbench) and shot them. I just gave them a light wipe with a rag covered in the Bore Butter. They shot great and I didn't notice any unusual mess in my barrel.

I had to go take a look, and these don't look flakey. And I'm an expert on flakey. jd
