Vihtavuori Powder Question

Looking for information comparing Vihtavuori powders to H4350

I have been trying to find a powder that I might use to replace the H4350 that I have been using in my F-Open rifle loads - .284 Win., using a Berger 180 Hybrid.

I would like to find a powder that has the same performance characteristics as H4350, including temperature sensitivity - if that's possible, and if not, then something close.

I would like to hear from anyone who might be able to recommend a Vihtavouri powder that comes close to or is comparable with H4350.

All opinions welcome.

Thanks,

John

burn rate chart shows N150 and N550 being closest to H4350.

That table is either wrong, or the basis for the rankings doesn’t necessarily correlate to useage and pressure.
N150 loaded to FTR loads in a 308 loads almost gr for gr with Varget, it’s just bulkier. This exact search ( for an H4350 substitute) is how I found it and started using it to replace Varget 7 yrs ago.

N550 should be close but double based, I believe I’ve heard of a newish N555 that might hit the spot, but I don’t know anything about it.

I think it's hard to use those charts with VV powders.

N550 is shown well slower than H4350; however, with N550 in a 308 case I was able to get 215s to velocities I will not repeat, and destroy pockets in new Lapua Palma in one shot. Genuine Aussie loads, but with H4350 I was never able to over pressure even with a long freebore and a case slam full, 49ish grains. But even then in all but the fastest lots of H4350 the velocity wasn't there.

John, I think I recall that there is some discussion that the N555 is supposed to be more stable. Not something that's on my 308 radar though.

I don't think N550 will work for us here in the US. @Laurie might be able to weigh in on whether of not the UK shooters have used it. It's a high energy powder with a fair shot of nitro in it, so it's not going to be particularly stable.

Well that's certainly intersting - thanks, that's good to know

If you are just looking for a temp stable sub for Hodgdon H4350 and it doesn’t have to be Vihtavuori, check out the new Reloder TS 15.5 as a possible alternative. Several forum members are testing it now, so you will find a few other threads about it.

Ciao from italy

Viht has a completely NEW powder out. The new powder is VN555. I have not used it but others whom I trust have. It is only very slightly slower than H4350. If it is like VN565, also new, it will be as temp stable as the very best of powders and it should burn very clean as other VV powders do.

When looking at that chart I would be tempted to try H100V it may be even easier on a barrel than the VV powders. Ive used vv165 in my 6.5-284 and have never been sorry.

I do know that N160 works great in my 6SLR, and reported to do the same in about every other short action 6, and powders that work in the 308 sized 6s tend to work in the 284. Might be worth testing, someone probably has.

I have downloaded VV reloading manuals over a number of years until they stopped making them downloadable & have found that their loads have become more conservative over time, albeit not to the extent quoted here.
