vihtavuori 140?

i have the opportunity to purchase an 8 # jug of this powder at a very attractive price. all vv powders are pricey around here, so being a fan of vv powders, i'm interested, but i'v never used this one. it's burn rate seems to be about same as rel 15 and varget, maybe very slightly faster and it is single based. anybody used this one and in what cartridges? burn rate would suggest a good one for the 6mm br case or the .223, maybe the 22-250. seller will let me try 1 # at no charge, so i appreciate any current users's advice positive or negative. as always, thanks in advance.

N140, winchester brass, cci BR4 and 77 SMK!

That combo in my 223 will hold half to 3/4 moa elevation at 600 yard. With that load my elevation has not been an issue. I snatch all of it locally I can get!
Fast as well. 2880 in my gun at 24.1 grains.

It is also Sieras accuracy load in their manual....

lpreddick, I have not used the N-140 but use the N-540 in several different cases with very good results. It has shot very well out of my Dasher, and is my go to powder for a long range hunting load from my 6.5X47 with 130 Berger Hunting Vld's. I also use it in my 300 RSAUM with 155Gr. Hunting VLd's. It is not temp sensitive and burns very clean. I would think the burn rates between N-140 and N-540 are very close and applications should be very similar. Hope this helps some.

I used it with great results in 223 early on when I shot service rifle for high power. Having moved on to a match rifle I still use it with lighter bullets (Berger's 90BT specifically) in 6HAGAR.

Also good for Palma / 308 with 155's but can be a bit peaky if you test in cool temps then get a hot day for a match. N150's a little less prone to this. Same thing true for N540 vs N550 while the 500-series are good for 100 - 200 extra FPS depending on the cartridge.

They're all fine products, burn very clean. Pricey because of where our dollar is these days.

buy it! I use it in my 6br shooting 90 scenars in a 10 twist and my rifle shoots it much better than varget and it groups with varget really well...

N140 is a very widely used powder in the UK and continental Europe, except by those shooting magnums and larger cased 6.5s etc needing slow burners of course. With Viht powders being cheaper here than US varieties, I'm pretty certain most gunshops sell more N140 than any other powder in GB.

What can you use it in? Anything where you'd consider H4895, VarGet, Re15 and similar. It's the 'standard' powder here for 308 Win with 155-175s. It works very well in .223 with 69s to 80s, .30-06 with 150gn class bullets, .243 Win with lighter bullets and so on. In 6BR, I much prefer VarGet, but it's usable especially with 80-95gn bullets.

You might not get quite as high MVs with N140 in 308W and .223R as with VarGet, but it gives very consistent results.

N-140 is fantastic in 22-250 with 50-55 grain bullets. Tried 4 different powders in the rifle and the N-140 really woke it up. Turned it into a factory tack driver. Great all a round powder.

I use it in .223's with any load Varget fits. Some of mine do better with Varget and some with N140. Go figure I have to have different loads for rifles of the same caliber, guess that's what keeps it interesting!

N-140 is my go to powder for 22-250, 22-250 AI and 308 win, gives me consistent results and burns cleanly with little muzzle flash plus Vhitavuori powders are the cheapest powders locally so whats not to like?(=

lucky me...seller gave me one pound to try and BAM! with very little work my 22 BR printed a .142 and .199 inch 3 shot group with two different loads, .2 gr apart shooting 65 gr jlks. my 22BRX put 3 75 berger vlds into a .104 and .082 inch group with two different charges. not to be outdone, my 223 ackley put 3 63 gr cheeks into a .101 inch hole. this last cartridge was FULL and lit with a russian srm primer and no high pressure signs. needless to say, i bought the jug!!! just curious, are single based powders more forgiving than the double based ones? are pressure curves more consistent with less tendency to be erratic than when lighting a double based(two chemicals to light)? as i worked up these loads i really didn't have anything to guide me, so i just increased by .2 gr waiting for pressure signs. toward full cases i almost thought i could hear a different tone and recoil...maybe the "ring" some shooters describe. the groups got smaller as i shot. these observations may be fantasy but there must be something we are experiencing. i like it!
