video borescope?

I saw some time ago a thread about a video borescope from Amazon. I wonder if anyone has any experience with this unit. Its about 200$ and Amazons reviews are not too explicit. My limited use for one doesn't really support a Hawkeye, so any info out there?

Lyman is supposed to offer one mid year...price is around $200-250.

I bought one of those video borescopes from Amazon and found the picture to be of a poor quality so I returned it and received a replacement. It was no better than the first one so I returned it and received a refund. It may be ok for looking down your plumbing or other non precision things but as far as a rifle barrel it was not for me, especially after looking down a barrel with a friends Hawkeye Borescope which was outstanding.

I have a Vision Optics 4.8mm x 18" borescope that gives me a view that looks as good as what I have seen through the hawkeye. It came with both a straight ahead view and a 90 degree view attachment as well as a tiny magnet attachment. I have had it for several years now.

The only drawback to it was that the probe was not rigid but flexible which made getting a stable view in any bore larger than .22 something of a problem. I solved it bey wrapping masking tape around the end of the probe to make the diameter appropriate for whatever bore I wanted to inspect. Mine is not equipped with cameras or recorders, you just see what you want to look at through an eyepiece.

It was much less expensive than the least expensive Hawkeye. You would be surprised at how much you can use the thing--at the very least you will find out what bore cleaners and cleaning methods actually work and how many are just snake oil and hot air...............BTW, I believe that VO offers models with cameras and such if you MUST have that--they are a lot more expensive as I recall.

Amamnn, trying to find references to Vision Optics and hitting sort of dead end. Can you provide any more info, please.

Sorry to confuse you. Try googling VO scope. That name is all over the case and instructions and the scope while the company name only shows once in tiny print on one page and it's Visual Optics...... :o...................it's been a while since I looked at the instructions..................

After reading your last post and remembering how hard it was for me to find a good scope back when hardly anyone was making them--I looked around on the internet and was appalled to see all the crap being offered in this area these days. Additionally, try as I might, I could not get a link to my VO scope. So, I googled my model number VO VTXX-4FLED and found this----->which is not quite but almost the same as my tool. The difference as far as I can see, is that this tool is offered as a white light producing viewer and a UV viewer. Mine is white light only.

The really irritating thing is that this website is one that came up on a google search, but never was my scope seen on that site going through google looking for borecopes or inspection devices. I only found it after googling the model number.

"Please email, chat, or call for availability"
That tells me that it's not available yet.
Lyman says on their website, June.

I ended up making one myself for about $50 for a "one off" job.

You are right, when I called them a few weeks ago after a Google search showed Optics Planet had the Lyman Borecam they said it is not available yet and they did not have a date when they would receive them. This is not the first time that I have seen Optics Planet make it look like a product is available when it is not.

I bought a digital borescope off Ebay 15 months ago, it cost me $217. It can take pictures and video. The quality isn't good enough to see small details, but I use it to look in my bore after I'm finished cleaning. It works really well for that. The video and pictures are not as good as the display, I believe it's because of the poor quality of the codecs used for creating jpgs and mpg.

Mine came with a 3 and 10 foot fiber cable and it is very durable. Unlike the Hawkeye you can drop it and it doesn't have any effect on it. I'm very pleased with mine, but I'm just a shooter not a gunsmith. I figure in 5 years they'll be new one in hi rez at half the price, so I won't be out much money.

Look at this one

Junk. I bought that one and sent it back the same day I received it for a refund. Can't see any rifling details or copper fouling. It's basically only good for finding mice in holes and clogs in drain pipes.

Now Larry's other products are pretty nice, but his bore cam is as "sub par" as anything else you can buy on eBay for $60

Really like the idea of your scope. Looks similar to a Hawkeye eyepiece design, but with a flexible cable.

If found your 18" VT scope for sale and they also make it in 24", 36", and 48". Pretty good price at $300-ish if its as good as you say it is. No monitor, but the problem with monitors is that the image can never be better than the quality of the screen. So not much of a disadvantage IMO.

I have a Lyman bore cam on order, but am considering the VT.

Anyhow, here's a link to the 24" VT-4FLUV model I'm investigating.

I found the Larry Willis to be quite good, borrowed it from a friend. Color resolution was not great but clarity was very good. Could see virtually everything in the bore. You do have to tweak the adjustments to get it to where the resolution is very good. I could see tooling marks in factory barrels, throat errosion, etc very well.

I had only ever looked through a Hawkeye when I bought mine from Larry. There was no doubt the image was complete garbage in comparison. You can see the rifling with Larry's scope, but you're not gonna be able to detect the fire cracking, or copper deposits because the color and detail is so horrible and the straight view is so narrow. You may see something and can take a "guess" at what it is, but you can't see it in perfect clarity so you can never be certain. If you saw tooling marks on a barrel with it, they must have been really bad. It doesn't matter how you tweak the settings. Larry went through the whole thing with me on the phone before I told him I was sending it back. The monitor is just a low resolution cheapo Chinese made product and he puts a light reflector on the end of the eye. Only straight viewing and it's not even wide angle. Doesn't hardly work at all in large bores from 30 cal on up because the Teflon reflector doesn't throw the light well enough. You can turn the light up more, but then you white out the image.

I was readin reviews where folks were really happy with the ProVision scope. It has a 6000 pixel resolution, but only a 5.8mm head. The VT is probably nice because it has a 7400 pixel resolution and the head is 4.3mm so it will fit in 17 cal barrels and up.
