Veterans Thank You For Your Service

Service runs deep in my family, all my uncles on both sides and an aunt on mother's side. My dad and an uncle from my mom's side were career, my dad in USAF and uncle Jim in the Navy.

All 4 of my younger brothers served at least one enlistment active, guard, or reserves. One did 20yrs in USAF Reserves the other an active tour in the Army then transitioned to USAF reserves until 30yrs. I was career USAF, retired 1995.

Watching TCM's tribute to Veterans as I type, They Were Exendable, is airing now.

Edit to add: Forgot that 2 uncles dad's side also served, one in VietNam and the other in the USAF stateside.

We are a warrior family, our members fought in every war this country or the colonies before the country ever fought in, all of them. My father flew Hudson Bombers in the North Atlantic anti Sub Patrols, his three brothers were all Navy, but one, was a Marine, 1st Marine Division 1940-46. I served as a Recondo / LRP Sargent in the 101st Airborne Div 64-67. We all came home. My son did 23 years as a PJ/CRO Major and the Daughter a Sargent did 6 in the sand box. Our family sir name is 6,000 years old and actually means "man of war".

A day or remembering as all my team are now gone except for me.avatar8836-1.jpg

My daughter gave me something last week that I never knew existed. My mother kept a diary from 1943 thru 1946. She gave it to her grand daughter. My father wasn't drafted in the early years of the war, which was unusual to say the least. My older sister became ill, and the physicians advise was to move to a dryer climate. Common advise in the 40's. They moved, and my father was drafted within weeks. Turns out he had been working 16 hours a day on the Oak Ridge Tennessee uranium enrichment project. I am almost hesitant to read the entries in her diary from the standpoint of comparing the sacrifices that were made by those amazing people, and looking at the entitlement mentality that is so common today. It really irritates me to see what has happened to the USA. A bow of the head to the Veterans and to those families that also gave their all for our Country.

I do not speak for all, but you are welcome. You called us, we answered the call.

God, Country, & family...

My 3rd grade great-nephew asked me to be at a rally at his school today. There were several of us Vietnam Vets, Army and Air Force (even a great-grandpa who was Army Air Corps) and Navy. A couple dadsWe had a breakfast, and then the teacher had a form the kids took around and asked us: which branch and why, where we served, what we did (I glossed over that), how did we communicate with family, how was the food, and what we missed the most from home.
Then we went to the gym and the kids sang patriotic songs; Star Spangled Banner, God Bless America, and my favorite "This Land is your land". It was a great morning.
When I came home from 'Nam it was a very contentious time. Protestors and a divided country. Today was really a late "Thank You" from my country. It was the best day...

Army Airborne Ranger, RVN August of 1969 thru September of 1971. Sgt, E-5. Chu Lai 16 months, then Danang for 9. Early discharge, cop-drop, went from bad to worse. Farm kid from the St Louis area to Washington, DC. In the 70's you could get a six-month early out to go to work for a PS. They were having trouble finding police officers.
