Veteran's Day

Today is a time for remembering and reflecting. It is a time in my life I will never forget, and I wouldn't trade anything for the experience.

Also, I still love "peaches and pound cake"..........It's been 45 years.

God bless all our past and present troups because I wouldnt be typing this without each and everyone of them.

Our History Died Today

He was getting old and paunchy
And his hair was falling fast,
And he sat around the Legion,
Telling stories of the past.

Of a war that he once fought in
And the deeds that he had done,
In his exploits with his buddies;
They were heroes, every one.

And 'tho sometimes to neighbours
His tales became a joke,
All his buddies listened quietly
For they knew where-of he spoke.

But we'll hear his tales no longer,
For ol' Vince has passed away,
And the world's a little poorer
For a Veteran died today.

He won't be mourned by many,
Just his children and his wife.
For he lived an ordinary,
Very quiet sort of life.

He held a job and raised a family,
Going quietly on his way;
And the world won't note his passing,
'Tho a Veteran died today.

When politicians leave this earth,
Their bodies lie in state,
While thousands note their passing,
And proclaim that they were great.

Papers tell of their life stories
From the time that they were young,
But the passing of a Veteran
Goes unnoticed, and unsung.

Is the greatest contribution
To the welfare of our land,
Some jerk who breaks his promise
And cons his fellow man?

Or the ordinary fellow
Who in times of war and strife,
Goes off to serve his country
And offers up his life?

The politician's stipend
And the style in which he lives,
Are often disproportionate,
To the service that he gives.

While the ordinary Veteran,
Who offered up his all,
Is paid off with a medal
And perhaps a pension, small.

It is not the politicians
With their compromise and ploys,
Who won for us the freedom
That our country now enjoys.

Should you find yourself in danger,
With your enemies at hand,
Would you really want some cop-out,
With his ever-waffling stand?

Or would you want a Veteran
His home, his country, his kin,
Just a common Veteran,
Who would fight until the end.

He was just a common Veteran,
And his ranks are growing thin,
But his presence should remind us
We may need his likes again.

For when countries are in conflict,
We find the Veteran's part,
Is to clean up all the troubles
That the politicians start.

If we cannot do him honour
While he's here to hear the praise,
Then at least let's give him homage
At the ending of his days.

Perhaps just a simple headline
In the paper that might say:
"OUR COUNTRY IS IN MOURNING,
A VETERAN DIED TODAY."

But we in it shall be remembered
We few, we happy few, we band of brothers;
For he today that sheds his blood with me
Shall be my brother; be he ne'er so vile,
This day shall gentle his condition;
Make him a member of the gentry, even if he is a commoner.
And gentlemen in England now-a-bed
Shall think themselves accurs'd they were not here,
And hold their manhoods cheap whiles any speaks
That fought with us upon Saint Crispin's day.

As a retired Navy Pilot Veterans Day has always has always been very special to me but no Veterans Day will be more special than this one. My son is in the Special Forces and he just returned from a very difficult deployement to Afghanistan. His team lost a couple of members and several others were wounded. He is my Hero.

To all the families with 3 sided folded flags in their homes, may your memories of your missing loved ones be filled with laughter more than tears. They will be remembered always for the sacrifice for this country and others freedoms. I know it's so in my home, God Bless.

For me it is a honor to live in this country. Can't thanks the military enough
that sacirfy everything to protect us back home. Also if anyone watches espn check out there centerpiece today on troops coming home and surprising there familys if u don't feel something u don't have a heart. The part that gets me is those who never got to come home and lost their lives to protect freedom.

Larry,

It is good to hear from you. I would like to thank all of the Veterans. Thanks all you have done.

Thank you to all the vets and their families that have gone before me and gave me my chance to serve. Also thank you to those who continue to serve, and the families that allow them to do a difficult job. To my brothers and sisters in arms..
cheers,
Doc

For any of you vets that have been awarded a purple heart medal, Wisconsin has just come up with a nice benefit. Wis residents can get a conservation patrons license ($165) for $10. Non residents can get hunting and fishing licenses at resident rates. This is for real. I got mine today. http://dnr.wi.gov/permits/veterans.html
