Sounds like a royal pain. Much easier to coat and then flute.

I never cared for woodwork; sometimes I would cut a board THREE times and it was STILL too short.

I've painted fluted barrels, a steel ball bearing works great to cut the tape at the edges of the flutes. Just tape it good down in there, then run the ball down the flute until it gets through the tape!
