Very happy with AR

I bought my first AR about 9 months ago and just now getting around to finally shooting it. I purchased a basic 16" barrel collapsable stocked Windham Weaponry. I have never owned an automatic rifle so this was a first. The first 3 groups of 3 shots apiece went into 1" at 100yards. with absolutely no load development. load was Varget and LC brass, fed. gold primer and 55gr. dogtown, to say the least I'm extremely pleased. these AR's are way more accurate than I had expected. Especially with the loose nut sitting at the back of the gun. oh yea optic is a Burris 2x-8x-32 older signature I purchased here also.

I shot my first AR a month ago. Buddy of mine has a all stock Colt with factory iron sights. We was shooting clay birds @ 50 yards standing up. We had a little game we was playing. We was lining up 10 clay birds and had to shoot them as fast as possible. Quickest time won. It was a blast! The barrel sure gets hot!!!

Windham is a good name.

I love my R-15. The only thing I dislike about ARs is the thrown brass.

I agree about the brass throwing. being a bolt gun guy all my life I sure hate to see my brass hit the cement at the range. I read somewhere about cutting 1/2-1 full coil off of the ejector spring and it would not toss the brass so far. I may try doing that sometime in the future

I have a 1:9 Colt HBAR Elite I've been sitting on, not firing as I wanted to keep it new in case I decided to sell.
The cold weather finally got to me and I decked it out with a Magpul stock, Sierra grip, Harris Bipod, Adcon QD mount for a Nightforce 12-42X56 BR scope, a Gieselle trigger, etc...looked goofy to me, kinda of tacticool. :P
Worked up some loads to try with VV133 and Sierra 60gr FBHP Varminters in LC brass. Finally brought it out, dialed the scope in, and proceeded to shoot 8 of them into .193" at 100 yards. It doesn't look so goofy now. :)
I may never be able to duplicate it...but it's still amazing to me. I do believe it will be a consistant sub .25" gun with this load single feeding. I'm not sure auto feeding yet, as my loads were a bit long.
VV133 @ 22.8gr, C.O.A.L. of 2.265" bullets weigh sorted.

An AR with a good trigger & barrel is tough to beat. They will put many bolt guns to shame. As previously stated, even with inexpensive Dogtown bullets they are accurate.

On a bolt action rifle if you work your bolt slowly the case will fall out on the shooting bench. If you work the bolt rapidly you will throw the case past the shooting bench on your right.

The same holds true on the AR15 and bolt velocity controls where and how far your brass will fly. The majority of AR15 rifles are over gassed to make sure they will eject lower powered .223 ammunition.

I wouldn't modify the ejector sping, but wet tumbling your cases with stainless steel media will remove any dirt and grit on your cases and not scratch your reloading dies.

It may take a while but you will get use to the mother chuckers. :o

When I first started my son kept telling me I was loosing my cheek weld because I would look up the see where each case went. :'(

Both of the previous are good ideas. I put an adjustable block on the LR308, I use a feed bag on the R15. I'd use it on the 308 but the first piece seems to hang up at the front of the bag and causes problems.

Turning down the gas is a good thing. Not only do they eject more consistantly it also cuts down on the dented brass.

Think of a gas block as your cold water valve at the kitchen sink. AR's have the gas system wide open same as the water valve wide open, Fills the glass very quickly ( AR bolt moving under full pressure= fast hard ejection) Slowing down the fill rate of the glass is the same as using an adj. gas block. Thus slowing the bolt cyclic rate. Any gas not used in the ejection goes out the barrel. Shutting off the valve turns the AR into basically a bolt gun.

A not-so-cheap brass catcher (but a nice one) is from 3bucc.com. Easy on & easy off. I've got 2 of them.

A 5 shot group at 100 yds with 35 gr Bergers in an AR chambered for .20 Practical. (Grid is 1/4")

I've tried all the brass catchers previously mentioned and found them wanting for various reasons. My current catcher has been the best to date! It is expensive, but had I bought it first I wouldn't have spent half as much trying to find a good brass catcher.

Instead of spending lots of money trying to fool with gas blocks, etc. just cut 2 coils off the ejector spring and all your brass will land in a nice neat little pile at approx. 1 O'clock. The majority will land in an area about the size of the inside of a baseball hat. This modification doesn't cost anything and keeps hot brass away from those shooting next to you on the firing line.

I use a brass catcher on my shilen barreld 204 ar. It works fairly well. Especially when target plinking. When coyote hunting I seldom mess with it. I like the clay pigeon shoot that sound fun. Cheaper than shooting eggs! I see you are shooting dog towns I shoot them at times in my 204 the 34 grainers. You do get a few more flyers with them but not bad. I have weight sorted thru 50 or so just to see and they do tend to vary a bit. Nothing serious for plinking though. Hornadys and Berger have been allot more consistant. They cost more though. Dog towns for all practical pupose are a pretty good value in my book! Just my thoughts.

All this talk about modidying your AR is kind of funny. All you need to do is either get a cheap net with pvc as the frame and set it up next to you. They sell them as well. I made mine for $8.
Heck use a cardboard box too the right of you. They are free. The brass will deflect into it.
Better yet just go buy one of these and never worry again.
