Vertical Stringing

I have been working on a 6.5-284 Norma project for about a year and have reached a roadblock. I worked up a good load using Lapua cases, Fed 210 primers, H4831sc powder,49.2 grains), and SIE 142 HPBT bullets. Initially, I had the Savage 110 action with 28' Lothar Walther barrel set up in a Savage stock until my Richard's Microfit stock came in. I was able to regularly shoot .75' groups with the temporary setup. Now that I have glass bedded the action into my new stock I am getting terrible vertical stringing. My first shot is landing 12' away from the bullseye. Each successive shot lands closer to the bull. What is going on?

What happens when you put the old stock back on ??????
Did the barrel float 100% in both stocks ?

I 2nd the barrel float check. I have had action pressure issues with those stocks in the past. Put action in stock and rock it fore and aft and see if you can feel a high spot in the middle of the action or trigger guard areas.

Razorback,
Assuming you got your scope mounted back right after the bedding job, it sounds like action stress to me, although I've never seen one move that much. Two things to look for:
1. Check to see if you have a clearance underneath the recoil lug. When you bedded it, did you tape the bottom and sides of the lug, or bed it tight? Also check for any debris that may have gotten in the lug recess when you popped the action out of the bedding.
2. On the Savage actions, the tang area should be free-floated. If the action is making contact under the tang, it can be stressing your action when you torque the action screws down. Think about how that action fits in the bedding. The rear action screw is in front of the trigger - if the tang makes contact before the back of the actions seats in its bedding, the action will 'draw' downward at the rear action bolt. You can fix this with a gouge, chisel or snadpaper. Need at least the thickness of a yello wpost-it note under the tang, unless you have exceptionally good bedding.

I will bet that you bedded the rear of the action and/or have tightened the rear action screw down TIGHT. This will almost aways cases the veterical stringing. Try lossening the rear action screw or if it is bedded - relieve the bedding from the rear of the trigger rearward and let it hang free.

I really think this will solve your problems.
