Venting stock for small fan?

I'm thinking of porting/venting the barrel channel of a stock to the bottom and placing a small fan to pull heat/mirage away from the barrel. Any thoughts?

The entire length of the barrel gets hot and produces mirage, so drawing air in only from the forend channel area would only solve some of the problem.

Perhaps a thin-walled lightweight coaxial tube could cover the entire length of the barrel; ambient air could be drawn in from the muzzle and breech ends, and exhausted by a fan or blower located somewhere in the "middle", perhaps the front part of the fore-end. I think you'd want to exhaust the hot air a bit to the left or to the right, so that it does not interfere with a clear sight line from the rear to the front sight.

You need a better understanding of thermal dynamics. If you are doing enough shooting to generate enough het to be worried about, yu would need multiple nos. of these fans and numerous holes in you forearm to move enough air to do any good. That and a car battery to run all the fans kind of makes one think you better re-think that idea.

Have tried a few of those fans (from old computers) and find that they don't pull/push much air.
Exhausting hot air downwards is harder than pushing it up.
Is the venting mainly to cool the barrel or to avoid mirage?
Those passive mirage shields installed above the barrel work well.
For accelerated cooling I would look at a compressed air set up. Compressed air would be cooler and easier to distribute where you want it. I'd rather carry a bottle or 2 of compressed air than a battery.

Uneven heating or cooling is much worse than none at all. I wouldn't try this without time and money to do a lot of R&D.

Simple battery powered fans like you buy at Wal Mart helps with Mirage from groups in your string at 1000 yards. My gun scores way better with a fan hitting it. Now this is after 7 sighters in a few minutes and 10 records in about 40 seconds. I even have a mirage shield and see a difference. In fact at the shoot yesterday my buddy told me his gun shoots way better with a fan. Do you ever look at the heat coming out a muzzle brake after shooting a few shots. Matt

It must help with perceived vertical from mirage

I shoot at Williamsport and a lot of guys use a fan. Maybe you go to the site pa1000yard.com and look through the picture gallery's you will see some. I don't have a picture. Matt

I just went through the pictures on the site and photo gallery 92 2010 World Open, page 10, 2nd row down 2nd from left. That is the only picture I saw of a fan. The last 2 to 3 years a lot of guys are using them. Matt

Sorry if this is not along the lines of your thread Ray but I saw this today at Home Depot.
Runs either on 18v lithium battery or 120Vac

Ray,
Would there be any way to recycle the fan from a hair dryer (like members of the fairer sex use so much) for your purposes?

This idea of using a fan to cool the barrel has been messed with a lot. I would like to see one though that works. There has to be a way.
