Velocities, VLD Hunting Vs Target, any difference?

I have a nice loaded worked up for my 284 shooting 180gn Berger target bullets and have just found out my last remaining box of 180gn Bergers are the thin jacket hunting version, not what I have been using, the thick jacket targets. I dont have time to tune loads or shoot over a crono before a match this weekend. Has anyone tested the thin vs thick jackets to see if there is any difference in velocity with the same load/seating depth?
Just want to make sure it stays in the accurate node.

I doubt that you would see any difference in the required load except you may need a different sight elevation setting. I use the same load in my Shehane for the 180 VLD and the 177 Cauterucio which are more different than the Target vs Hunting VLDs. But I would not mix the Bergers becuase you could see a POI shift.

It wasnt so much the POI I was worried about, but the velocity/tune. I know my barrel starts showing verticle spread when I move away, up or down from its favourite speed of 2830 fps.

Understand. I used the Hunting VLD in my first two Shehane barrels then switched to the Target version in the second and subsequent barrels. I did not notice any change in velocity tune with the same powder as long as a barrel of the same length and contour was mounted on the same action.

I had the same question a while back and asked Bryan Litz. He told me they would shoot the same. I tested this in a 6.5 L and a .284 Shehane. He was correct as usual.

That is a very good question. I always thought that the target VLD's had little slits from the ogive to the tip, but after reading this I analyzed the hunting VLD and saw that the jacket looks exactly the same. So what is the difference in the two?

The only side by side test I ever did was with my 1K heavy gun in 6.5-284, and it showed a distinct POI difference of 6" apart with 5 shot groups at 500 yards.

Not a definitive test by any means, with only one group each, but enough to abandon the idea of using up my thins for sighters and the thicks for groups.

Maxpower,

How did your match go, did you notice any difference? I guessing that you didn't. I had the same issue come up with my 6br. I ran out of 105 target VLD's and didn't notice until I went to load for the 600 yard benchrest match at Piedmont Gun Club so I used some of my buddies 105 hunting VLD's and the gun shot the same as it does with the target bullets. Hope all went well, Brian.

Well, conditions were not the best so I cant see how they compare accuracy wise. I will try them again in better conditions.
