Well, I have decided to have a new varmint rifle built. It will be a low volume varmint rifle and it will be used for varminting out to 1000 yards, with the bulk of the varminting being from 400 to 800 yards.
I have decided I want to design the rifle around the 300 WSM. It seems to be doing real well and the Norma brass is showing excellent results. A friend of mine is currently using a 300 WSM for his long range varminting. It is an awesome shooting cartridge. He uses the 110grn V-Max out of his rig, and he is currntly running it around 3650fps out of his 28" lilja barrel. It is a very impressive set up. It is absolutely devastaing on small and large varmints out to 800 yards.
Do any of you guys use this cartridge and bullet combo for your varminting. I have seen the article about Richard Franklins 300 WSM Varminter, that is an awesome set up indeed.
I already have a .30 cal barrel with a 1-11 twist. My friends 300 WSM is a 1-10 twist and it seems to shoot the 110grn V-Max's really well, so I am thinking my 1-11 should work too.
Anyhow, I would like to hear from those who are using the 300 WSM or the 110grn V-Max for varminting. I will probably use the 125grn BT because it has a much higher BC than the 110grn V-Max.
