Anyone use the 308W for varminting?

What twist is good for 110 to 125 gr varmint bullets?

The BC of the 110gr VMax is acceptable at .290 .

Barrel life would be good.

Cases and dies are abundant and cheap.

There's the recoil question when doing a lot of shooting, but with these light bullets and a heavy barrel it may be okay.

I saw that someone was using the 300WSM for varminting with light bullets out to 1000 yds, and that being so the 308W would be fine past 500 yds.

It would depend on the size varmint you are shooting at....he he he.

Seriously I know several guys who use a .308 on yotes and groundhogs. We have used a .308 on p-dogs also.

I use a 1/11 twist and my buddy uses a 1/13 twist in .308 with 125 t=& 135 grain bullets. So far he has shot 168 grain bullets without any problems.

I don't know about using the .08 for varmints but getting a 110 gr set out far enough to get close to the lands could be very challeging.

Recoil is always an issue for me but for you, as you said, heavy barrel-light bullet.

I have to use breaks on my equip. Not that I like the expense but I found one I like & it helps me a great deal, not real loud and I stay on target especially w/ 22.250..

Sounds good. Personally I would rather have a flat shooter w/ less recoil. I have talked to Sierra Bullets, one of the guys told me he does just exactly what you are talking about. He said is devasting & explosive uopn impact. Well I guess so!

It's been awhile but I think he said he was using about 39gr of RX7 w/110gr hp.

Recently tried some 110 Hornady V-Max, loaded in Hornady .308 factory ammo:

Almost no felt recoil.

Accuracy hovered around .5" for three shot groups at 100 yards. Prone with a bipod. I was impressed.

In the past I've handloaded 110's, 125's and 130's for varminting with my .308 Win. Why the .308? Because there's a limit to how doggone many rifles I can cram in my safe and my .308 is too accurate to ignore when it comes time to zap a varmint! I'd like a dedicated .20, .22 or 6mm varmint rifle someday - but for now the .308 does fine.

short of the custom twist & chamber set up.We are talking about using a reg 308 winchester set up as a target rifle ??.Great trigger & good sights...it's one of those try it to see if it will work deals...my sako 270 win sporter shoots the 110 sierra so well I use it for a walking varmint rifle sometimes..I feel silly with those huge cases but it is effective..Terminal effect on big groundhogs is nothing short of spectacular !!! It has been likened to being stuck by the blunt edge of an axe...I prefer my 6mmbr gun for most of the set up shots...If you have the rifle & wish to try it one box of ammo will tell you at the range if your gun likes those short bullets or not...If the accuracy is good enough there is no reason you cant shoot it at big groundhogs...I'd keep the shots to under 350 yds..mike in ct
