Varmint Bullet Help

Need suggestions on a very high quality varmint bullet. 6MM BR 1/12 70-80 grains. I'm getting variations in the ogive of V-Max's that's causing seating depth to vary as much as .010.
These are for a custom gun that doesn't like the variation.
Don't care what they cost.

Twud,

What I found with the V-Max 75s was an actual variance in the bullet diameter up to 7 ten-thousandths. Maybe that's what's causing your variance in ogive measurements.

In any event, try the Berger 80s. These shoot tiny little groups in my 8-twist 6BR.

Did you really mean .700",seven ten thousands). How deep are you seating your bullets?
The advice from the smith who built the gun was .005 off the lands.

DIAMETER
.0007",seven ten-thousandths) spread. My V-Max Bullets varied in diameter from 0.2428 to 0.2435.

I tried seating .005" and .010" into lands. Never tried jumping the V-Maxs because the results were so poor, while the Bergers shot tiny bugholes.

I have gotten excellent accuracy on paper using the Sierra 70 grain BlitzKing bullets. They have the accuracy of the MatchKing bullet with the explosive performance of the Blitz bullets!

Some guns like jump. My girl friends .243 in 1-10 twist shoots the 87gr Vmax well with a .050" jump. My .243 likes the 70 gr Noslers with a similar jump.

Are you sure it's the bullets causing the problem and not a donut in the case neck? If you are seating the base into or past the neck-shoulder junction a donut will significantly affect seating. Not turning necks on some brass can have the same effect. The neck thickness varies enough sometimes to cause seating problems.

I'm not an expert but it seems there will some variation at the ogive with all bullets but that shouldn't cause a large variation in seating depth. The seating stem should press on the bullet on a spot that has less variance to the ogive than the base.

Look here for custom bullets:

This is a brand new gun and brand new brass. Seating depth was supplied by the smith who built it. I've got $5,000 tied up in this rig and don't want to be disappointed my first time at the range. I'm going to shoot it tomorrow and see what happens.
