A very difficult seating situation!

I am having great difficulty seating 53gr V-Max's concistently via my RCBS seating die in .223 Rem. . It appears that the seating stem recess isn't deep enough and as a result doesn't reach the ogive of the bullet. Has anyone else encountered this issue? Are there any suggestions on how to combat this problem, can I buy a VLD stem for the die or even a specific VLD 223 seating die?

DLH,
make sure you have a generous chamfer on the case mouth, this can help those darn flatbases get in the case. there are vld seating stems out there, if you are savvy enough I have heard of folks "deepening" the stem with a dremel. my hands are not steady enough to pull that feat off. hope this helps a little. RCBS has great customer service if you just give them a call, I bet they will take care of you.
holiday cheers

Thank you for such a fast response doc! Are Forster or Redding seating dies better at seating VLD's?
Christmas wishes DLH

+1 what Dusty said.
I know you may not want t wait until Monday but give rcbs a call. those forster and redding products are great too. the vmax plastic tip may be yielding a little in your seating stroke. if you try another flat base (non plastic tip) bullet ibet it "feels" a little different. I use a lot of Berger 52gr fb and varmageggons depending on the application (and match fee ;)). in my experience, all the FB bullets are happier with a generous chamfer.

put a blob of hot glue in the stem, screw it into die (in press) and down on to a dummy cartridge, let sit. When it cools you have a temporary perfect fit stem. Heat to remove.

More than one way to skin the proverbial cat

Or...fix your seating stem, permanently.

Measure the diameter of the 53 gr VMax, about 0.020" to 0.030" below the insert on the ogive of the bullet.

Find the drill bit that is closest to that diameter. Drill the seating stem.

Ruin ONE of your 53 gr VMax by polish the sharp edge inside the seating stem, by polishing the stem with some metal polish on the end of your bullet.

You should be able to get a wilson inline seater for $45-50 and you aint gotta even touch it to get straighter more consistent rounds

Hmmmm.....put release agent (Johnson's Wax will do) on your dummy bullet so it won't stick!!
