RPM along with speed helps with a good splat and lift.
The hornady traditional varmints don’t like a lot of RPM.

So what are you classifying as varmints? PDs, Groundhogs Coyotes What? Hit a PD or Groundhog in the belly with most anything and it's going to POP varmint bullet or not.
When I first started PD shooting in SD I used a 22-250 and a 308 . The 22-250 was awesome out to 5-600 yds for splat factor but a 125 NBT in 308 was much better beyond that range.

Coyotes in Texas. No PD's until we get north of Amarillo.
Still have a 26" Savage 112V in 220 Swift - drilled many, many PD's in Kansas - 52 & 53 grn bullets. 3850-3900fps. Gratifying to see them from eyeballs up, peeking out of the hole.
Hit em' and would rip them out of the hole.

AR-15 wildcat 22x47 with custom .308 bolt/barrel extension. 24" X-Caliber barrel 1-9 twist.
70 grn Berger VLD's at 3550fps with RL-17. Hit pressure at 3605fps.
Yotes at 300 yds drop in their tracks - no bullet exit.

Custom Terminus bolt gun, 22 Creed, Bartlein 24" 400ModBB carbon wrap 1-7.5" twist barrel.
80 grn Berger VLD's at 3500fps with H-4350.
Yotes out to 550 yds DRT. Inside of 300 yds, sometimes the bullet does exit..
Dead yotes....
