Varget vs N140 with 200gr

Hi
Im deciding between these 2.

Which is the better powder for 200gr in 308 30''barrel ? and Why?

Regards
P

You'll get different opinions on which one is better from different shooters, different barrels may prefer one over the other accuracy wise. Both work for the most part, velocity will be similar between the two.

i shoot 200 gr Berger Hybrids in my 28" F/TR .308. i have used Varget extensively, but did try N140.

the load that worked for both powders was grain for grain the same. Velocities, at just under 2700 fps with Palma brass, also the same. accuracy was similar. with a fair amount of Varget on hand compared to my supply of N140, i saw no reason to switch from Varget.

on the other hand, in my F Open 6BR rifle using 108 Bergers, i ended up switching to N140, as i saw better vertical control at 600 yds compared to Varget. again, loads and velocities were identical.

Velocties between the two powders should be similar on a per-weight basis as has been noted. Some believe that N140 is a much cleaner-burning powder than Varget.

Just out of curiosity, has anyone come up with a modified burn rate (Ba) file for N140 in QuickLoad that actually works across a wide range of charge weights?
