Varget vs. 2000mr for 185 juggernaut

Ok started doing some load dev using varget 15-20 off land and 185 jugs for my 170 freebore 30" 1/10 bartlein. I got to 45gr using palma brass with about 2760 pretty accurate. Now i purchased few lb of the 2000mr whats load is everyone using on same bullets and fps they're getting...
Need to know if its worth starting over. Tnx
 
I shoot 47.5 2000-MR with 185 Hybrids loaded to a COAL of 2.955 (just fits in AIAW mag) and getting right at 2850 from 26" Bartlein 1 in 10 twist. I've been shooting that load for about two years with good results.
 
I do not know of any F-TR shooters that are still using 2000MR in competition loads. A number of people (self included) tried it a few yrs ago.

  1. It's double based so it's temperature sensitive. If you load to max velocity (and that is why you are using it) you have a very real chance of getting overly hot loads on hot days. I blew primers at Raton in 2013 and at one other match
  2. Temperature sensitivity may cause you get "out of your node" when it gets hot.
For me the final straw was at the TN state championships in about 13 or 14. I shot in a lollypop relay that should have been an easy 198, which is what the other top shooters got. I shot a 192 losing 6 points to elevation.

I use it for my 7-08 hunting loads. Great velocity and in the fall/winter I don't worry about temperature.

Im from hawaii if that makes any diff. Our range can get up to 88-90 with humidity on the side but winds pretty cool.. No dry heat
 
I have a hard time believing that one. I couldn't get enough H1000 in a 6SLR behind a 105 to be effective. Maybe in a 300WSM
 
Called alliant and ask data for the 185 bullets. According to their test, they got to 45.6gr with 2672 fps using 24" barrel for testing...
Anybody tried them with 30" barrel and what fps getting?
 
You could probably approach 2800 or better with PP2000MR... but like said above, it's probably not even in the top 10 best powders for .308 for most of us who have 4 seasons, so many don't use it. We got silly velocities with 90gr bullets in .223, but the temp instability was terrible.

I also mentioned to their customer service guy that im from hawaii and our temp is stable all year long average 75-90. 88-90 under the sun on the range during competition day. According to his calculations my fps might effect up to 30fps..i dunno it that will make any diff to 600yards???
 
I shot a good bit of 2000MR years ago in competition. Like everyone said, it's not as stable as other powders but it does gives velocity for sure. I went back to Varget & H4895 as it's more consistent. I was running 47.6 gr 2000MR under Berger 185s (hybrid and juggernaut) in a 11 twist 4 groove 28 inch Krieger and getting 2830 ish ftps. That was in large primer Lapua brass with CCI BR2 primers.

It's not a matter of distance... its a matter of whether thats enough to move the load out of its accuracy window. 185s are pretty forgiving, so you might be okay.
 
I played with it with the 185's but there was too much variation. 8lb jug just sat there for a year or so.

No data but worked up a load for 155's, the variation window was a lot looser with the 155's and they shot lights out, somewhere up close to 50 grains with Winchester brass, no pressure issues, velocities unbelievable. Varget and H-4895 came back around and I haven't purchased any more MR2K.

Did I mention velocities were unbelievable?
 
OK, I'll say it. In my experience Berger 185 gr bullets, Hybrid or Jug's and Varget go together like gin, tonic and limes. In F-TR long range low ES and SD are fare more conducive to low scores than a little more velocity. The temperature insensitivity of Varget makes one less thing to worry about during the match. If you just can't find Varget you have to go eleswere, but it seems to be generally available the places I get my powder from.
