Varget Powder Availability?
Same here i am using IMR 4064 for my 308 win when Varget dried
4064 wrung out to be best in my 308 back when everything was easy to get. Never had any reason to go away from it.

Too bad the secret is out, now other powders are going to be hard to find. Some may find better loads and shoot better. Just kidding.

Split between 3 shooters not very long. I used 8# this past year just working on loads and different bullets. And didn't shoot but 1 match. This year I plan to attend 10+ matches

Just more noticeable now since people use to stock up all the time and with the powder availability it wasn't so obvious competition shooters would stock up to last a barrel or two out with the same lot of powder. Now, it is a sin to plan for the same lot to last you your barrel

I wonder how many years it takes to use 32#..... >:(

I think you should note that he said he went in with friends.

As for how long? I shot over 16 lbs of powder last yr. So not as long as you might think. Hell, I loaded four pounds in two days getting ready for Raton.

At 44 grains per load that is 5090 rounds. I will likely shoot that this year. A year's worth is hoarding? I don't consider that hoarding even if he didn't go in with other shooters.

this is the first time since reloading I have had more than 8# of powder total on my reloading bench. Now I can play with loads more and not worry about running out of powder . I am loading 46gr right now so it went fast with the few #s I did have

I get 157 rounds or so out of a pound; so for Raton, I went through about 3 pounds in 3 days. You load more and faster than I. Maybe you use 2 Chargemasters. ;)

I shot 2700 rounds through my .300 WSM last year. I get 106 rounds per pound of H4831 SC. That's 25.5 pounds, just in one rifle. About 90% was shot in competition. If you compete frequently, buying 32-48# is prudent, not hoarding. Changing powder lots in the middle of a season is a PITA that I do not need.

Folks who only hunt or shoot casually usually don't have anywhere near the usage that competition shooters do.

When I just hunted varmints, I would buy my bullets in 100 rd boxes and powder in 1# cans. Primers would be a few hundred at a time.

Now, for practice and competition, you shoot thousands of rounds a year in multiple rifles. You purchase powder and primers by the case, bullets by the 1K. With all the cash you spend going to events, you don't want to waste a lot of time and effort redeveloping loads because the lot numbers changed on your powder and primers. The differences in a box of 500 bullets are enough to keep you busy in the off season just sorting them.

So I don't think that competition shooters are hoarders (though it may seem so compared to more casual shooters), they are just careful to plan ahead for their match needs.

I totally agree. I buy my bullets 2000 at a time from Swampy (it's fun to see the USPS truck come down the street,) my powder in pairs of kegs of the same lot, brass at 500@ a time, primers at 5 or 10 k lots. I'm all set for 2014.

Check Powder Valley Inc RIGHT NOW!!!

Somebody posted on the NM forum they have Varget and 8208 as of 10 this morning. I just saw that post, after reading this thread....

When I can casually buy some Varget without having to drop everything I'm doing and rush to a computer, I might use it. Right now 4064 is plentiful and I'm putting all my efforts toward using it. I'll let you guys know when I see Varget though. It'll be entertaining watching everyone scramble to get it.
