Varget for more speed?

Looking for more speed ,hoping for 3000fps with Norma 130gr bullets out of my 6.5 Creedmoor 24" barreled RPR. Using the new Lapua brass I have gotten close with H-4350 using CCI-450 primers. But I just can't get enough powder in the case with out a lot of crunching going on.Was thinking about using Varget, has anyone used this powder with any success on accuracy and speed ? I love the new Lapua small primer brasswith H-4350 and 140gr bullets. Getting great results with 43.5grs and Berger Hybrids (2850-2855fps). Would just like to get 3000fps out of the Norma 130's.Anyone have any comments? Thanks

If you can get your hands on Vihtavuori N550 you may reach your goal. I use 41gr in my 6.5x47 Lapua (28" Bartlein) and can reach 3,000 with Berger 130 Hybrid. Not sure as to what your starting charge weight with N550 would be in the Creedmoor.

I've been testing the new Lapua small primer brass against Hornady and it holds up to stout loads much better, with no pressure signs ether. Using H-4350(with a 140gr Hybrid Berger)43.5grs and CCI-450 primers to me is a relatively warm load, but very accurate. And shows no pressure signs on the brass or with the bolt opening. I'm just trying (safely) to reach 3000fps with the 130gr Norma. I may just have to wait until I rebarrel with a 26"-28" to achieve that speed.

I have been shooting the Berger 140 hybrid out of my RPR for almost 2 years now and they group the best at about 2,800 fps in my rifle. We have pushed them closer to 2,900 fps but the results were no where near as consistent. My goal is accuracy and consistency out to 1,000 yards and not the fastest obtainable muzzle velocity.

This is a rather extreme example of what Varget, or any powder, can do when you just pull stuff out of the air, or your butt in this case. Not directed at the OP, but it seemed like a good place to show the pic. Customer with a new custom rifle decided he would go off the reservation and load Varget at about 4 grains over max. When asked how he derived the load data, he just pointed to his head. He's damn lucky.

WOW.... I once stopped a guy buying all new reloading equipment.. A whole basket full... He just grabbed a bottle of powder to reload .223 and .308.. He had no idea just figured one was as good as another... Never even cracked a manual and his choice of pistol powder would not have been good in his rifle.. I just told him your lucky that would have blown it sky high... Told him to go read the manual from front to back before selecting a powder...

No Hijack intended LWP, but you may find that Varget at published max is showing pressure before you get to your goal of 3000 fps. The pic shown is extreme I know, and the guy was extremely ignorant and has since been very careful with Varget. He isn't getting anywhere near 3000 with a 26 inch Krieger before the primers are getting flat. Save that good brass!

Judging by the customers groups at 300, Varget did OK but 4350 was better and more consistent, probably due to exactly what you said - case fill. I just have a lowly 260 improved and use R 19 though:D
I wish I had some chronograph data for you, but he seems content to wear out his barrel and learn nothing.
EDIT - Another customer has had good results with more speed using Hybrid 100V. You might give that a whirl.

I believe He is referring to the fact that Varget is a much faster burn rate and Will pressure up way quicker. Matt

Just a part of it but common since would tell me that a 6.t creedmoore isnt suppose to shoot 3000+ fps, its not made for that. It will over pressure blow primers. Accuracy wise you wont get any. Your going way outta safety limits imo. 2700 and or 2800s is where the creedmore is made to shoot... its not a hot rod.

If you wnat to push a 6.5 bullet 3000+ you need a longer barrel first of all, and a 6.5x284, or 6.5x280AI, 06 case, something that can handle it..

Jmo.. i dont care if your gun blows up, at least I point out the obvious..

Rl17 is hot crunch powder with it

IF you can drop the 130gr Norma and use 123 smk (G7 .260)to achieve 3000fps with Varget. If not i would try and MOLY the 130's to reduce some pressure if you're hard up on the goal.

Thanks eric32, I just have a bunch of Norma .264 130gr moly and unmoly bullets to use up.

if you have the moly'd bullets i suggest test those out but i think 2925 and those bullet will fly very well. 3000fps doesn't gain much in ballistics
