Value? Remy 722 in 243

Hello,

I have an opportunity to purchase a Remington 722 in 243 win with an older leupold 3-9 vari-x II for $500, but the problem is that it's been heavily modified. The barrel has been recrowned with a recessed target crown, the barrel was set back and rechambered(around 18-19"s in length), the stock is a synthetic 700 bdl with floor plate and has been glass bedded, and the down side is that it has a basic spray paint camo job done on it which doesn't look bad but covers the whole rifle and glass. I plan on using it as a walking varminter/deer rifle and seems to be perfect for that. I guess my question is has it been too heavily modified to have any resale value in case I want to sell it down the road? I am uninformed when it comes to older rifles and resale values.

It has no collector value left because of the mods. You'll make more money parting it out than selling as a unit in my opinion.

In my opinion, buying a used rifle like the one you described, essentially you are buying the trigger, action and the scope. The barrel is an unknown but probably very tired if already set back. The stock is of little value before the paint job. New Remington 700 rifles can be had for around $450 if one shops a bit, used ones often lower. I think the rifle is way overpriced at $500

The scope is easily worth $150.00, so you'll have $350.00 in to the rest of it.
You plan on hunting with it, so the camo is a plus....
The action alone will always be worth at least $350.00
Not a bad deal if you ask me....

If the buyer brings savvy to this deal...ie, can think along lines of parting it if he wants to, it is just on the edge of "too high". It is not a great deal. However, if the buyer is just wanting the gun to go, as in shooting, and if he does not like it, try to sell it, I think he would need to find another buyer willling to overlook all the "issues".

i would pass...and Lord knows I love an old Remington.
