Using Varget in heavy 223 or 6x45

I started at 26 gr of Varget for my 6x45, (70 gr bullet) and it is a compression load. Best groups were <27 gr., but 28 showed no pressure signs.

Anybody else tried Varget, it is supposed to be faster than BL C... but BL C is probably denser, since it is a ball powder.

In my 6x45's H4895, Varget and BLC all work great. RL15 should be good too. I got really good speed and accuracy with the Sierra 80 gr Varminter and BLC. CFE223 got the best speed, nearly 100 fps more than anything else, but never did get consistent accuracy. It might be worth a try in your rifle.

As far as heavy .223s, I use 24.6 gr. of Varget with Sierra 90s/7" twist/Lapua brass/Tula 5.56 primers/loooonnng throat for right around 2800 fps. Shoots well at 800-9000-1000 and doesn't beat me up after an 80 round match...
Could use more powder but don't want to beat up my $$$ brass.

In .223s with 90s, Varget will generally give velocities around 20-30 fps slower than H4895 at different accuracy nodes; the H4895 load typically being about a grain lower than Varget. However, H4895 can also push the brass beyond it's pressure limits. For example, in a 30" barreled F-TR rifle using 90 VLDs, it's not unusual to expect about 2820 fps with Varget and about 2850 fps with H4895. Brass life with the H4895 load will definitely be shorter than with the Varget load. Seems as though the "realistic" upper pressure limit is somewhere between the two. In terms of precision, Varget works just fine. The only issue I see is that the kernels are a little on the large size for a small case like the .223 Rem. However, that is not a deal-breaker.

25 gr Varget and a CCI #450 with an 80 gr. A Max. Have use the BR primer but found that the Mag primer works the same.

My best load for accuracy in a 223 is 26 gr Varget with a 69 gr bullet. 26 gr also works all the way down to a 55 gr and is accurate.

I use Varget in my custom. I'm using 23.8gr with 80gr VLD's in Lapua brass with BR4 primers. Flat, fast, and accurate. (2840fps)

At the club where I shot for about 10 years, there were many ATC shooters. They always said that barrel length made a big difference. In a 26" match rifle, use Varget. In a 20" service rifle, use RL15.
