Used scope experience

I think if you stick with a brand with good customer service, such as Leupold and Nightforce you can get some bargains. I picked up a 6.5-20 Leupold EFR Target Dot that was essentially perfect, but there were some water spots on the ocular so the guy sold it for $400 complete with box etc. I checked with Leupold and they said Isopropyl alchohol was OK for cleaning. A couple gentle wipes with a q-tip and Isopropyl and the ocular was perfect. This unit retails for about $650.00:

Check for things like main tubes that have been dented or warped, and run the turrets up and back to make sure they function well. If you're allowed an inspection period, put the scope in Burris rings,no marks) and run a "box test" to check tracking.

Recently, I finally conceded that my NF 8x32NXS might be drifting. My grouping was erratic and not as good as I thought it should be. Seemed like I was resetting the zero too often.
To find out, I bought a used 5.5x22 from someone, and when installed my groups dropped in half & better. Everything consistant with it. Swapping back and forth, I could see that the 8x32 scope had an internal issue for sure, although I don't know what).
I sent it to NF and they returned it within a few days fixed,I hope). They replaced the internals and the turrets.

There is just no way to prove a scope issue like drifting without comparison to another, good scope). The 5.5x22 scope is too small for me, but even if I never use it again, it was worth the money to end my tail chasing.

If you come across a truly good scope, hang on to it as a 'standard'. Could save alot of barrel life down the road.
