URSA NorCal Event Schedule for Q4 2019 Set

What is the story on the venue?

Any chance to practice outside of an event?

Thanks.

Thanks for your inquiry.

The Match Director will provide specific location and travel info prior to each event. That info is typically posted on the CalGuns site, this forum - http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/forumdisplay.php?f=327

Practice is already included as part of each event. Please see the course of fire at FAQ 13 on this page - https://www.unlimitedrange.org/operations.html Beyond that opportunity, it all depends on the Match Director - see the contact link on the schedule page. Please note that targets do not stay in place between events and it is a substantial effort to transport and set up each event. So, likely you will need to "suffer" with the practice opportunities at each event.

The venue is in the National Forest and is not a permanent range. If you bring your own target, you can practice any time you like. A 4wd vehicle is recommended to set the target, but the road to the firing point is usually accessible with a standard car. The road is unimproved, and they have been snowed off the range, so access will depend on the weather.

I suggest showing up to the match for the first trip up there. The match director likes to run 2 matches at 2000 yards before moving the group back to the 2500 yard firing point. I think it's 5 sighters, and you need 3/10 to qualify for the match. A match is 3 more sighters, 10 for score. If you didn't qualify for either match, you'd still get 30 shots at the target if he shoots 2 matches.

I don't shoot those matches anymore, but I do still shoot ELR with guys I met at them. Which is another good reason to show up for at least a couple matches. If you're a stone cold newbie, they'll help you get on target if your equipment is reasonably capable. Reasonably capable means a scope with enough travel, a solid 100 yard zero, and something with the ballistics of a 180 grain bullet out of a 26" 7 wsm. Enough travel is ~25 mils above your 100 yard zero for 2k at that location. I helped a guy get his first hit at that range with a 6.5cm, but that's certainly not the easy way. On a practice day with a smaller target, I watched a guy go 3/10 with a straight 284 tactical rifle his first trip up, but he's a pretty serious shooter that knew what he was doing.

That sounds good.

I'll try to make it if I can get my rifle together in time.

At least it will give me one place to shoot ELR distances because I don't know what other places there are for shooting 1,500+ in California.

One more question: it sounds like there are fees associated, any idea how much?

While I appreciate Shaun providing input, the official course of fire is at the link provided. We (Lynn and I) strongly recommend shooters not depend on a rifle in less than 338 LM - with a scope/rings/base combo that will keep you in the scope at 2054 yards. Spending a lot of time and ammo trying to get on target is of little help to the shooter and the other shooters - once the good conditions are gone... While many things are possible, going with less capable hardware is not where most will want to start. Lynn will normally have time to work with shooters after the event formally ends. Thanks for understanding.

Unclear where you got the idea that there are any fees involved - there are none and never have been.

Ok, I will keep that in mind.

On another note, your web site is hard to understand which is why I thought there might be fees.

If I understood what you were trying to say, I would offer to help with a rewrite. If you know what's going on it might make sense but going in cold it's hard to understand what you do or how new people can participate.

Please move this dialog to e-mail - webmaster@unlimitedrange.org Thanks.
