Upside Down Primer Removal

It’s a primer not a 50 mega ton nuclear bomb!… make sure you don’t have open powder or primers sitting by and push it out and move on.

Certainly is not a nuclear weapon.
Gentle push is the correct way.
However on the few times I’ve had to do it, I keep in mind it really is an impressive pipe bomb.

Many years before I switched to the Sinclair Hand Priming tool, I used the RCBS primer tube method. Not often, but I would occasionally get one that would flip due to the inconsistency of spring actuated primer plunger.

First thing I would say, do not rely on neutralizing the primer with water of a solvent.

I can tell you what I did but I will not recommend you do it since I have no control over your technique. I slowly ran the case through a de-capping die until it made contact with the primer then slowing increased the pressure easing the primer out. Never had one go off.

Since switching the excellent Sinclair tool, I never had one inserted upside down or off center the latter of which happened quite a bit with the RCBS primer tube method.

I haven't had that happen since I decommissioned my old RL550b priming system. Holy smokes did that system suck!

Agree with pushing it out. I used to do it all the time.

On my RCBS bench primer, it would be the operator’s fault if one was put into the pocket upside down.

Penetrating oil of just plain oil should render the priming mixture inert. Then deprime with sizing die.

Popped one out the other day. I don't worry about it. Just go
a little slower. Price of primers these days, it goes in my sorted
reject trays for fire forming.

I have done this more than once on my Dillon press. I used to be all worried about it for the first few years. I used to soak the case in water for a few days. Now if it happens I just use a decapping die to punch it out, then I flip it over and re seat it. So far no problem. It only happens when I am using my progressive press. I load the tubes manually and I see that none are flipped. I believe that they get flipped loading them into the press from the tubes. This is on a Dillon 650 Press. My rifle stuff I load with a precision Priming tool on my Area419 press. This primer also uses tubes but I have never had one flip over on me. If it did I would not be afraid to remove the primer. I have de primed life primers in the rifle calibers. How I look at it as long as I am careful I have not had a problem. Go slow, gentle.

For some bizarre reason, the plunger would flip the primer or, I wouldn't rule out operator error. But one thing is certain, it would often fail to seat the primer in the center shaving some of the primer cup or causing an off-center mark impression on the primer cup.

This was over 25 years ago so my memory is somewhat vague except that I wasn't happy with the system. So, I purchased the Sinclair tool which isn't cheap, but it was one of the best reloading tool purchases I ever made.

I've removed these more times then I can count. Never had an issue depriming them. On my presses if it detonates (which it never has) the primer is completely surrounded by metal. I always wear safety glasses when I reload

I've never been able to get a primer started up side down in my competition reloads ......
I pay attention to "feel" when I'm reloading.

So many old wives tails here lately .......

This only happens to me when loading on a progressive. I hand prime all of my rifle reloads with a FA priming tool. Never have those upside down

Goatsandguns You are right and it amazes me at how many pass on internet rumor as fact on something like this that can hurt people. Modern priming compound is made using lead styphnate and it is very durable. I have some that are failing from water but thy were bought when none could be found during Obama's first term, and are only failing recently. Once many years ago I mentioned lead dangers at indoor ranges from primers and was told I was full of it, that primers had no lead. This is what brought the small primed 45ACP cases to the world, non toxic primers for indoor ranges.

I just can’t leave it alone!… primers can be made inert!… I’ll get back to that in a minute. Primers are obviously very explosive! A whole tray of them I would not want to go off all at once on my bench but one primer? Extremely loud?…a .357 is loud! A .338-.378 with a brake is loud a primer is no louder than a little kids cap gun! Which I might add has been played with by literally millions of kids!… no safety glasses no hearing protection for decades!…When I worked at ATK they made thousands upon thousands of primers inert all the time soaked them in water for quite some time then they were ran through a grinder similar to what they use to shred up old car bodies except much smaller and occasionally one would still go off. So m61 and a few are correct as in if you were to spray it with wd-40 it would more than likely go off, if it sat for a week in it,.. probably not.
