Upgraded my Front Rest

I have a Caldwell Rock BR front rest that I got second hand some time back and have recently upgraded my rifle and scope so needed to follow it up with a improvement to my rest to get the best out of all this good equipment as its the earlier model rest that had the top that pivots rather than smoothly amoves from side to side.

Problem I was having was general looseness and side ways adjustment's always required an adjustment to elevation as well which made slight changes more involved than the should have needed to be.

I looked into a complete new rest along the lines of a Sinclair or like but with our exchange rate and heavy shipping costs that didn't have the appeal when it came to placing an order.
So the next best option was to look at a replacement windage adjustable top.
Seems there was a couple available to go straight onto the Caldwell but I finished up settling on a Dan Greenlaw machining model.

Read some very good reviews that spoke highly of its quality and functions as well as the good customer service.
Waiting on shipping and keen to see and try the upgrade. knowing the Caldwell base I have is weighty and sturdy and will do the job.

I will report back when it arrives and I get to put it through its paces.

Well the new top is fitted up to the Caldwell base and boy what an awesome unit it is now.
I'm really pleased with how its come together. The Dan Greenlaw Top is exceptionally well engineered and made. Couldn't be more please and after the first trip to the range I can see its value in its ability to improve my consistency.
The windage adjustment it perfect for the job being smooth and precise for the job required.

I now have the ability to move to cover the whole target without having to move the rear bag but a little undecided if using the full windage adjustment from the sighter to the last bottom target on the right side or to move the bag yet

I'm thinking if I set up the rest centring the adjustment on the centre of the whole target and use the windge to cover all left and right individual targers without the need to alther the rear bag will be the better option than using less windage but lots of rear bag movement.
So if you have advise, I'm listening.

This topic is timely. Last Saturday I shot some informal benchrest and have decided I want upgrade my rest. I shoot well with my Rock BR but as I have gotten better I am noticing little things that could be better. Maybe I should just switch the top....

Dan Greenlaw builds very nice rest at a decent price. Also good guy to talk too. He's built me three rests and I even use his top of the line Windage top on my one piece customized Pappas Rest. Good enough to win me local Benchrest competitions using an Anschutz rifle. Also kept The Rock and my son uses it for his AR15.

Nice. Now go out and buy a round bubble level with sticky back, find a flat spot on the rest base and make sure you level everytime you set up. That was the cause of the horizontal changing the vertical you wrote about.

It's definitely been a good move as my scores have improved and are far more consistent with this new top. The benefit of being able to cover the whole card of 25 targets without the need to move the rear bag makes a big difference,
