I have several of the old Nightforce 12-42x56 NXS and also many March 8-80x56 scopes. For any long range shooting/matches, I prefer the March. I can always dial down the power from 80. I usually find when shooting 8,9,1K after the matches I seem to settle on 40 power. For my .223, I'm usually at 60-80 power; almost zero chance of a crossfire with miniscule recoil. 308 however, I zoom out to see the target numbers or number boards to avoid a crossfire(hopefully). My Nightforces reside on all "Non-Match" rifles; AR-10's, 6.5 Creedmoors, etc...The mistake I made years ago was shooting one of my friends 6.5x47 Lapua rifles with the March 8-80x56 on it. I'm hooked.I know ultimately the answer will come down to "Which one I like the best."....but I would be interested in thoughts people have. Threads I found on this type of topic were pretty old.
I'm looking to upgrade the Vortex Golden Eagle that is currently on my straight .284 / F-Open rifle. I'm not an experienced F-Class shooter. But I got a taste of it at the end of this season and will definitely be shooting more next year. I recently did a couple of days on the 1K range (Whittington Center) with a friend and I wasn't too happy with the image I was getting through the Golden Eagle. I'd like something that can give me a clearer image.
I'm figuring my options (without totally annihilating the bank) are:
Nightforce Competition 15-55x52
March High Master 10-60x56
March 8-80x56
My questions:
Thanks!
- I'm primarily interested in thoughts on image clarity and ability to cut through mirage for both brands.
- Any strong feelings between the two March scopes listed? Price difference is ~$100.
- It looks like prices are the same wherever you get them. (Optics Planet, Midway, etc.) Is there a particular source folks recommend?

Shot out to 2000 yards with a March on my 338 Lapua in VA. Scope was mounted in an ERA-TAC Adjustable Inclination Mount. I loved being able to fill the glass with the target. Conversely, I shot a mile at the same location with a Bushnell FFP & Tremor 2 reticle. 6 power to see the 21 Mil holdover in the reticle to superimpose it on the target! No thanks. I did manage to connect with the target, but that pretty much pushed me away from FFP holdover-reticle scopes. I know they have their purposes...just not my cup of tea. Sticking with my March's! Don at LongRangeSupply is a great guy; bought 3 from him.
