UPDATED Can you over stabilize a bullet?

Too slow:then,?
Probably overheated from the combination of twist and muzzle velocity and or the barrel could be a little rough or fouled or all of the above. And if it it was just one bullet it might have just been a bad one. It definitely needs some diagnostic.. My suspicion is if it was pushed a little harder little grey puffs will appear..

Many years ago Precision Shooting Magazine had a discussion on this topic that became very heated with yes/no opinions and theories.

It came down to theoretical VS real world ancedotal evidence. It seemed then, and as of now still a matter of the faster you spin a bullet (ie faster twist barrel)the more torque is imparted to the bullet. At a certain point the minor imperfections (off center voids generally) overcome the bullets' ability to withstand them and the bullet "blows up". Todays mono-metal solids appear to have overcome this issue.

My contribution to the discussion centered around my attempts to shoot any 22 caliber bullets (other than the old Nosler Zipedo 60gr) in an 1:8" twist 22 Eargesplittenloudenboomer (22-378 Wby) more than thirty yards before this puff of smoke appeared when the bullets came apart.
For those of you interested; it was part of a test of the cryogenic barrel treatment. Cost of the treatment was within $25 of the cost of a new Lilja/Hart/Shilen barrel, so nothing came of it in the long run. You had to buy, and fit, chamber, and headspace the barrel prior to the treatment.

IMHO, yes you can.

in my experience, some bullets (sierra, berger) are more tolerant of high rpm (>300K), while others (hornady) are not. I've had overspun bullets keyhole like the OP's. slowed them down and "most" of the problem went away with only an occasional keyhole. Solved the problem by changing bullets.
Same findings here.

My 240 Laser with a 1-7 twist will tear the jackets off every bullet but the Berger and Noslers. Looks to me like you are spinning the jacket off those particular bullets and when the jacket comes off the bullet goes sideways. Nothing is wrong with the bullets, you just exceed the rps of their jacket design. You just change bullets to a thicker jacket.
The Laser will do 3,800 fps with a 115 VLDs and is built for 1,000 yards.

3,800 fps with a 115 VLDs
That's 391Krpms and all the energy to get there..
Even a hunting VLD should not blow up at 300Krpms. A target VLD, scenar, or SMK definitely won't.
I don't know what his bullet is, but I'm confident that going to another would resolve this.

Ive yet to hear of anyone over spinning a Barnes. Just sayin if you want to load to the max and let it eat they won't come apart.

Bullets don't always "disintegrate" when the core and/ore jacket gets damaged form running them to hard, ill post a picture later on when I get home from a bullet i found with a jacket "failure" that still tumbled to the target in more then less one piece and I suspect that might be what's happening with you. As to "over spinning" them no not unless they "pop" or the jacket gets damaged , i have shot 70gr bullets out of big case 8 twist 6mms at crazy speeds and they will all group till they don't make it to the target

There are anomalies, I think Gunnut26 ran into one here.
Otherwise, you practically have to go out of your way to blow up bullets.
Enough so that it should be anticipated in that case.
